Knights Falter In Opener Against Misericordia

Barnett leads four in double figures

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team opened their 2022-23 season at home against Misericordia Wednesday night, falling to the Cougars 76-54. Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) lead four Knights in double-figures with a team-high 12 points in the loss. 

Wednesday's loss drops the Mount to 0-1 overall on the season, while Misericordia notches their first win to move to 1-0. 

First Half 

  • The first six and a half minutes of the opening half was all Misericordia, as they jumped out to a 15-0 lead. Derek Smith hit three triples during the run. 
  • The Knights got on the board for the first time this season when Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) converted an and-one followed by two more free throws to get the Cougar lead reduced to 10 at the 12:59 mark. 
  • Todd Robinson hit back-to-back threes at the 8:11 and 6:57 marks to grow the Cougar advantage to 32-13. 
  • The final 11:42 of the opening 20 minutes saw the Cougars go on a 25-9 run to close out the half with a halftime lead of 42-16.  
  • Mount Saint Mary had a rough go of it in the first half, shooting just 5-of-33 from the field and 1-14 from beyond the arc. 
  • Misericordia shot 14-35 from the field and 7-21 on triples in the first 20 minutes of action. 

Second Half 

  • The Knights came out firing to open the second half, going on a 13-2 run over the first 4:14 of play to cut the deficit to 44-29. Barnett scored six points during the run while Yearwood posted five. 
  • Another Knights run came at the 10:04 mark. Trailing 55-35, they went on a 14-4 run to shrink the Cougar lead to 10 at the 7:24 mark. Barnett scored three consecutive baskets and Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) capped off the run with a triple. 
  • The Cougars were able to close out the game, with Nick Prociak scoring eight points over the final 5:38 of action to put the win away 76-54. 
  • Mount Saint Mary improved its shooting after the break, hitting 17-of-35 shots from the field but just 3-of-13 from outside the arc. 
  • Misericordia continued its pace from the field shooting 41.4-percent, but just 16.7-percent from three-point range. 

For The Knights 

  • Barnett lead the Knights with a team-high 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting in his Mount debut.yran added 11 points to go along with six boards. 
  • Yearwood and Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) supported the Knights offense with 10 points apiece. 
  • Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) ripped down a team-high seven rebounds and knocked down a triple. 

For The Cougars 

  • Prociak poured in a game-high 24 points on just 11 shots while pulling down seven rebounds on the glass for the Cougars. 
  • Kevin Lazdowsky filled the stat sheet, recording 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.  
  • R.J .Weise lead the game in assists with seven, while also coming away with nine rebounds and six points. 
  • Smith finished in double figures with 11 points while hitting three shots from long range. 

Game Statistics 

  • The Mount shot 22-of-68 from the field for the game, hitting just 4-of-27 shots from deep. 
  • Misericordia was 26-of-64 on shots from the field while shooting 9-of-33 from beyond the arc. 
  • The Cougars shot 88.2-percent from the charity stripe, compared to 60-percent for the Knights. 
  • Points in the paint were nearly even, with the Cougars holding a slim 34-32 edge. 
  • The Knights held a small advantage of 10-6 in fast break points. 

What's Next 

  • Mount Saint Mary will host The City College of New York at home Saturday at 1 p.m.  
  • Misericordia will travel to Catholic University on Friday night.
