Knights Soar Past Hawks

Figueroa matches career-high; Rivera nets career-high

Newburgh, N.Y. – Sophomore Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) matched his career-high with 25 points and freshman Justin Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) netted a new career-high 12 points on Monday evening as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team stopped a three-game losing skid with a convincing 104-74 road win at Hunter.
 
Monday's victory improves the Mount's overall record to 2-4 on the season, while Hunter slips to 1-5 through six tilts.
 
First Half
  • The two teams traded the lead four times in the first half before the Knights put together an 11-2 stretch to pull in front 27-20.
  • Figueroa started the run with a three-point play as part of a 5-for-5 effort from the field over 2:38 of game time.
  • Hunter got back in front 28-27 on a three ball from Gene Propper before the Knights ripped off the next five points, including another three-point play from Figueroa, to regain a 32-28 advantage.
  • After Hunter closed its deficit to 34-32 with 4:27 left before halftime, but the Knights ended the opening stanza with a 19-7 spurt to carry a 55-39 advantage into the intermission.
  • The Mount went 3-for-4 from the three-point range over the final 4:10 of the half with Rivera starting the closing run with a trey and Ryan Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) drilling a triple at the horn.
  • The Knights shot an efficient 58.3-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including a blistering 5-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Hunter was held to 13-for-37 shooting in the first half and hit on just six of its 20 three-point attempts.
  • Figueroa scored 16 first half points on the strength of 6-for-7 shooting.
  • Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 11 points
  • Rivera went 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the first half.
  • Propper led the Hawks at the break with eight points.
 
Second Half
  • Hunter sliced its deficit to nine points just under five minutes into the second stanza, but that would be as close as it would get.
  • The Knights quickly expanded the lead out to 23 points when Barnett canned a three-pointer to give the Knights a 72-49 lead with 11:56 left to play.
  • From that point, the Mount would keep the Hawks at a distance of at least 18 points the rest of the way.
  • The Mount's advantage surged to a game-high 30 points twice in the final 1:26 of the second half.
  • A Matt Monaco (New City, N.Y.) layup gave the Mount a 102-72 advantage with 1:26 left to play.
  • Jack Sassanella (Broadalbin, N.Y.) converted a layup with 51 seconds left to play to give the Knights the final 104-74 lead.
  • The Knights improved to 62.5-percent from the field after halftime, including 5-for-10 from three-point range.
  • Hunter was held to 32.4-percent shooting and went just 3-for-19 from three-point range.
  • Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) netted 12 second half points on 6-for-7 shooting.
  • Luka Jakic led the Hawks with 11 points after the break.
 
For The Knights
  • Figueroa matched his career-high with 25 points, going 9-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. He equaled the team-high with seven rebounds and added two assists and two blocks.
  • Cyran scored a season-high 19 points for the Knights after going 9-for-14 from the floor. Cyran hauled in six rebounds and handed out two assists.
  • Barnett added 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting, going 2-for-2 from the long distance. He joined Figueroa with seven rebounds and equaled the team-high with three assists.
  • Rivera came off the bench to go 4-for-4 from bonus distance, scoring a new career-high with 12 points and adding three assists.
  • Jayden Racca (New Fairfield, Conn.) also finished with three assists and added five rebounds.
 
For The Hawks
  • Jakic led Hunter with 17 points to go along with three steals.
  • Ernie Parada came off the bench to score 14 points.
  • Propper and Devon Matthews each scored 11 points with Matthews pacing the team with six rebounds.
  • Cormac Reilly led all players in the game with four steals.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot a season best 60.3-percent for the game and hit on a season-high 10 three-point field goals.
  • Hunter was held to a season-low 74 points on 33.8-percent shooting and a 9-for-39 effort from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary dominated paint scoring 52-28.
 
Game Notes
  • The Knights move to 3-0 against Hunter since the start of the 2016-17 season.
  • The Hawks entered the night averaging 101.4 points per game.
  • The Knights reached at least 100 points in a game for the first time since posting a 106-57 victory over NYU-POLY on February 15, 2014.
