Mount Saint Mary Dealt Road Loss At Vassar

Yearwood, Cyran net double-figures

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team closed out play in the 2022 Hudson Valley Classic Saturday evening with a 61-48 road loss at Vassar. Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) posted a team-high 13 points, while Jayden Figueroa (Ne Windsor, N.Y.) hauled in 13 rebounds.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-3 overall on the season, while Vassar improves its season standing to 3-1.
 
First Half
  • A sluggish start saw the Knights knot the score at 5-5 on a Yearwood three-pointer just over seven minutes into the contest.
  • The Knights raced in front 15-10 following a Miles Calame (Staten Island, N.Y.) conversion with 8:22 left before the break.
  • A Yearwood three-point play with 1:33 left gave the Mount its largest lead of the first half at 25-16.
  • Vassar finished the half scoring the final three points, all from the free-throw line, to cut its disadvantage to 25-19 heading into the intermission.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot an even 40-percent from the field prior to the break and connected on three triples.
  • Vassar was held to just 20.7-percent from the field and struggled from bonus distance, going only 2-for-18 from behind the arc.
  • Cyran led the Mount with 11 points in the first half on 5-for-7 shooting.
  • Ethan Ellis and Luke Adams led the Vassar attack with five first half points apiece.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar quickly erased its halftime deficit with a 14-0 run over the first 3:52 of the second half.
  • The Brewers grabbed a 26-25 lead on a Kevin McAuliffe triple 1:57 into the second frame and extended its advantage to 33-25 on a McAuliffe four-point play with just over 16 minutes left in regulation time.
  • The Knights got on the board in the second half with an Elijah Barnett (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) bucket at the 15:52 mark of the second half.
  • A Brenden Graham (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) jumper sliced the deficit to just 39-36 with 11:22 left to play, but the Mount would not be able to pull closer than three points the rest of the way.
  • Vassar pushed its lead to double-figures for the first time when Adams converted a layup with 6:48 left to give the Brewers a 50-39 lead.
  • The Vassar advantaged ballooned to a game-high 15 points twice before settling for the final 13-point decision.
  • Mount Saint Mary went just 8-for-28 from the floor after the break, going 1-for-10 from three-point range and 6-for-13 from the charity stripe.
  • Vassar improved to 50-percent shooting after halftime, connecting on eight triples and converting 10 of its 16 free-throw attempts.
  • Barnett scored seven second half points for the Knights.
  • McAuliffe erupted for 22 points in the second half for the Brewers on the strength of 6-for-8 shooting from three-point range.
 
For The Knights
  • Yearwood finished with a team-high 13 points and added two steals.
  • Cyran scored 11 points and hauled in six rebounds.
  • Figueroa led all players in the game with 13 rebounds, chipping in nine points and a pair of blocked shots.
 
For The Brewers
  • McAuliffe did all of his scoring after halftime and finished the contest 6-for-12 from three-point range.
  • Adams finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Case Parsons led the team on the glass with 11 boards, adding two blocks.
  • Avni Mustafaj handed out a game-high four assists and contributed five points and six rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary wrapped up the game shooting 34-percent overall and went 4-for-19 from three-point range.
  • Vassar converted at 34-percent overall, but connected on 10 three-pointers.
  • Vassar outscored the Mount 15-8 from the free-throw line.
  • Mount Saint Mary held a 24-8 advantage in paint points and a 13-4 edge in points off of turnovers.
