Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team hosted Oneonta at the Kaplan Center Tuesday night, where it took down the Red Dragons 68-61. Kate Hughes (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) drew her first career start, where she led a trio of Knights in double figures, scoring 12 points in the win.
Tuesday's victory moves the Knights to 2-1 through three games on the young season, while the Red Dragons fall to 1-2 on the campaign.
First Half
- The two sides came out trading blows, ending the opening quarter with the Knights holding a 16-12 edge.
- Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) got the scoring started, as she knocked down a triple 40 seconds into the game to give the Knights their first lead, 3-0.
- Oneonta would get their first lead at the 5:44 mark, when Nadia Brown banked home a layup to put the Red Dragons in front 6-5.
- The Mount built a six-point advantage, its largest of the opening stanza, at the 1:13 mark following a converted and-one by Ciarra Quinn (Bayside, N.Y.).
- A layup by Olivia Dobrovosky with 53 seconds remaining in the opening 10 minutes dropped the Mount lead to four, where it would stay to open the second quarter.
- The second quarter looked very similar to the first, as it was tightly contested and went 26-25 into the break, with the Knights leading.
- Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) hit a pair of jumpers to push the Mount Saint Mary edge to 20-15 with 6:55 left in the second period.
- A pair of triples by Meg Nardelli put Oneonta back in front 21-20 at the 4:38 mark.
- The two sides traded baskets the rest of the way, with the Mount entering the break ahead by a single point.
- The Mount shot 11-for-34 from the field to open the game, and just 1-for-11 from beyond the arc.
- The Red Dragons went 11-of-39 from the field in the first half, including 3-for-14 on triples.
Second Half
- The Knights built a cushion after the third period, leading 48-39 heading into the final quarter.
- K. Smith knocked down a jumper at the 4:45 mark in the third to give the Mount its new largest lead of the game, putting them ahead 40-33.
- Kaeli McAnally (Bay Shore, N.Y.) knocked down two triples to get the Knights lead to double digits, making it 46-36 with 1:51 left in the third stanza.
- Cailean Nolan (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) opened the final period with a triple on a feed from McAnally to push the Knights margin to 12 at 51-39.
- The Red Dragons wouldn't go quietly though, as following a layup by Sophia Wakin to make it 57-53 with 5:01 remaining, Oneonta suddenly only trailed by four.
- A pair of free throws by Hughes and a layup by Brianna Guglielmo (Smithtown, N.Y.) extended the Mount Saint Mary lead to 65-55 with 1:50 left in the final quarter, and that all but sealed the deal for Oneonta.
- Mount Saint Mary improved its shooting in the second half, hitting on 12-of-30 shots from the field and 4-of-13 from deep.
- Oneonta also was more effective, sinking 15-of-31 from the field and knocking down two triples on eight attempts.
For The Knights
- Hughes finished the night with 12 points and nine rebounds, while going 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
- Guglielmo provided 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while pulling down six boards and swiping four steals.
- K. Smith had a solid all-around game, contributing 11 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three assists.
- E. Smith and Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) both added nine points each.
For The Red Dragons
- Meg Nardelli scored a game-high 16 points for Oneonta, while drilling four triples.
- Dobrovosky posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Molly Stephens and Sophia Wakin both chipped in eight points.
Game Statistics
- Mount Saint Mary finished the game hitting 35.9-percent from the field and 20.8-percent from three.
- Oneonta shot 37.1-percent from the field and knocked down 22.7-percent of their triples.
- The Red Dragons held a small advantage in points in the paint, outpacing the Mount 34-30.
- Oneonta also won the battle of second chance points, outscoring the Mount 21-13 .

- Mount Saint Mary will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when Old Westbury visits to tip-off Skyline Conference action.
- Oneonta will have a quick turnaround when they host Cobleskill on Thursday night.
