Knights Suffer Straight Set Loss In First Round Of Skyline Conference Championship

Cullinan, Riddle each lift 10 digs

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team saw its 2022 season come to a close Tuesday night following a 22-25, 6-25, 13-25 loss to third seeded Manhattanville in the First Round of the 2022 Skyline Conference Championship. Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) closed out the match with eight kills for the Knights.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 11-15 overall on the season while Manhattanville improves to 22-6 on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • The Knights put away 11 kills in a tightly contested opening set.
  • The two sides traded runs for much of the first set with an Erin Lema (Centereach, N.Y.) winner knotting the score at 17-17.
  • The Valiants answered with the next three points, including an Alejandra Figueroa kill, to open a 20-17 advantage.
  • The Knights and Valiants alternated the next four points with a Riddle kill bringing the Mount to within 22-20.
  • Following the Riddle winner, the Valiants scored three of the final five points of the set, including a kill from Hannah Pena to grab the 1-0 lead.
  • Manhattanville raced out to a 7-0 lead in the second frame.
  • Mount Saint Mary answered with five of the next seven points, getting a kill and an ace from Riddle, to cut the deficit to 9-5.
  • Following a Lema winner that brought the Mount to within 10-6, the Valiants closed the stanza with the final 15 points to grab a commanding two set advantage.
  • The Knights were held to just a pair of kills in the second frame with Manhattanville putting away 12 kills and hitting .500.
  • An early 3-0 stretch in the third set got the Knights to within 7-6 after taking advantage of two Manhattanville errors and getting a kill from Mary Milano (East Patchogue, N.Y.).
  • Manhattanville spread its lead back to 10-6 on a 3-0 spurt and following a pair of miscues ripped of five of the next six points to open a 15-9 lead.
  • The Valiants broke the set open with an 8-0 run to push its advantage to 23-10.
  • The Knights rallied with three straight points, including a kill from Riddle, to get to within 23-13.
  • A two-point spurt, including a Grace Ballagas service acae, finished off the match for the Valiants.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle finished the match with eight of the team's 18 kills and equaled the team-high with 10 digs while adding two aces. Riddle closes the season with a program record 1,110 kills.
  • Milano put away five winners for the Mount and added nine digs.
  • Lema posted two kills, two blocks and two digs.
  • Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.) finished the night with two blocks.
  • Jenna Cullinan (Levittown, N.Y.) joined Riddle with a team-high 10 digs.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 15 assists and lifted five digs.
 
For The Valiants
  • Ayla Ruiz led the offensive attack with nine kills and finished a strong all-around match with eight aces and 10 digs.
  • Sofia Morales added seven kills to go along with four blocks.
  • Vianca Vital handed out a match-high 27 assists, adding two aces, three blocks and eight digs.
  • Ballagas led all players with 14 digs and a trio of aces.
 
Match Statistics
  • Manhattanville closed the night with a 38-18 advantage in kills and hit .290 as a team.
  • Service aces went the way of the Valiants 14-3.
  • The Valiants also held a slim 4-3 advantage in total team blocks.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights close the season at 11-15.
  • Manhattanville advances to take on second seeded Farmingdale State in the Semifinal Round on Thursday.
