Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team opens play in the 2022 Skyline Conference Championship Sunday afternoon when it welcomes fifth seeded Yeshiva to Kaplan Field. Kick-off with the Maccabees is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with Live Stats and Video available for those unable to attend.
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary earned a home seed in the First Round on Sunday after posting a 6-2-3 record in conference play and an 8-5-4 mark overall in 2022. The Knights went 2-0-1 in their last three regular season contests, including a 9-0 win over Old Westbury in the regular season finale.
Mount Saint Mary features seven players with multiple goals on the season, led by a career-high eight markers and 21 points from
Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.). Maggi rounded out the regular season with five assists and potted the game winning goal in three contests for the Knights.
Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) continues his standout career for the Mount in 2022, sitting atop the team leaderboard with 11 assists and 23 points. Wyant is third on the team with six goals and has tallied the deciding tally in two contests.
Following a sluggish start to the season,
Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) has erupted for seven goals and enters the weekend just two goals shy of matching the career record for markers at the Mount. Doyle has scored two game winning goals and adds three assists for 17 points.
Peter Ramirez (New Windsor, N.Y.) supports the offense with three goals, while
Marco Mazzarelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Nick Resicgno (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Quinn Tynan (Schenectady, N.Y.) have all registered two goals on the season for the Knights.
Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) has manned the goal all season for the Mount, turning aside 73 shots. Martinez holds a .785 save percentage and a 1.18 goals against average and is tied for the Skyline Conference lead in shutouts with seven.
Scouting Yeshiva: The Maccabees limp into the conference championship after getting blanked in each of their last two regular season contests, falling 2-0 to Farmingdale State and 1-0 to Manhattanville on Tuesday night. Yeshiva comes to town on Sunday sporting a 7-3-2 overall record and the Macs closed the conference schedule with a 6-3-2 mark.
Lucas Baredes leads the scoring attack for Yeshiva with eight goals and 21 points, while Josh Ziarno adds seven tallies and 18 points. Ethan Fettaya checks in with a team-high seven assists and has totaled 17 points with Rafael Cohen chipping in 10 points on the strength of four goals and two assists.
Benjamin Brener has seen the bulk of action in goal for the Maccabees through the regular season, starting eight games and playing 759:05 of a possible 1079:03. Brener has stopped 43 shots, produced two shutouts and is working to an .878 save percentage and a 0.71 goals against average.
Regular Season Recap: The two sides met way back on September 18 with the Macs scoring a 4-1 home victory. The loss stopped the Mount's 14-match unbeaten streak against Yeshiva and marked the team's first loss in its conference opener since 2010.
Yeshiva raced out to a 3-0 lead, before the Knights got on the board with Wyant's first marker of the season in the 70
th minute. Yeshiva regained its three-goal cushion just over 10 minutes later when Cohen potted his third of the year.
Martinez finished the contest with five saves in goal for the Knights, while Brener held the Mount to just one goal and made seven stops.
Recent History: The Knights only blemish against the Maccabees in the last 15 matches was the September 18 loss. The Knights are 13-1-1 against Yeshiva dating back to the start of the 2007 season.
Recent Skyline Conference Championship History: 2022 marks the sixth straight season the Knights have qualified for the Skyline Conference Championship. The Knights won back-to-back league crowns in 2017 and 2018 and made three straight trips to the Championship Final from 2017-19.
