Knights Power Past Purchase In Regular Season Finale

Seven different Knights record a goal

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team wrapped its regular season up with a 9-0 thumping of Purchase Wednesday night. Kaitlin Hansen (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and Angie Mainiero (Vineland, N.J.) each tallied twice for the Mount in the victory.  

Wednesday's win finishes the Knights' regular season at 6-10-3 overall and 6-3-2 against conference rivals, while Purchase's final mark is 5-10-0 overall with a 2-9-0 mark against Skyline Conference opponents. 

First Half 

  • The game didn't even get through the first minute before the Mount got on the board. 
  • Mainiero received a feed from Maria Baldwin (Patchogue, N.Y.) and potted her first score of the game at the 56 second mark of the opening period. 
  • Hansen scored next at the 13:48 mark, as Emma Mihale (Oceanside, N.Y.) hit a corner kick into the box to Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.), who set Hansen up to net her first goal of the game to extend the Mount Saint Mary lead to 2-0. 
  • Mainiero got her second goal of the game in the 16th minute, when McGowan and Julia Accetura (Prospect, C.T.) set her up in front of the net to bury another to make the Knights lead 3-0. 
  • Hansen's second tally came at the 22:30 mark, with Mihale once again hooking a pass that Hansen buried. 
  • The final score of the first half came off the foot of Wendy Guerra (Newburgh, N.Y) with five minutes remaining, with Mihale helping once again to move the Knights cushion to 5-0. 
  • The Mount held the advantage in shots with a 20-0 advantage. 
  • The Knights dominated corner kicks 6-0 prior to intermission. 

Second Half 

  • The second half was very similar to the first, as the Knights continued the scoring. 
  • Marilena Mangiaracina (Franklin Square, N.Y.) found the back of the net in the 58th minute, after Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) and Jailyn Labuda (Glen Spey, N.Y.) played it into the box. 
  • McGowan scored a minute later, this one an unassisted tally, to push the margin to 7-0 for the Mount. 
  • Mary Langan (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) made it 8-0 Knights on an unassisted score in the 84th minute. 
  • Raina Quinones (West Babylon, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a goal with 2:23 remaining in the game to give the Mount a 9-0 lead. 
  • The Knights once again outshot the Panthers, this time 19-1. 
  • Corner kicks went Purchase's way 2-1 after the break. 

For The Knights 

  • Hansen ripped off ten shots while scoring twice, giving her 21 points with nine goals to finish the regular year. 
  • Mainiero potted a pair to move her season tally total to five. 
  • Mihale recorded three assists, a new single-game career high. 
  • Langan and Quinones both scored their first goal of the season. 
  • Caroline Brucato (Masspequa Park, N.Y.) and Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) combined on the shutout in goal with Kakavas making one second half save.  

For The Panthers 

  • Carolyn Hough stopped 17 shots in goal. 

Match Statistics 

  • The Mount outshot Purchase by a whopping 39-1 margin, including 27-1 in shots-on-goal. 
  • Corner kicks went in the Knights favor 7-2 after 90 minutes of play. 
  • Fouls got called against the Knights 7-0 for the contest. 

What's Next 

  • Mount Saint Mary will travel on Saturday for the First Round of the Skyline Conference Championship, with all the details to be announced when they become available.
