Knights Edged At Sarah Lawrence, 65-63

Figueroa grabs career-high 19 rebounds

Bronxville, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team suffered its third straight loss following a hard fought 65-63 defeat on the road at Sarah Lawrence. Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led three Knights in double-figures with 16 points and Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) hauled in a career-high 19 rebounds.
 
Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-9 overall on the season and to 3-3 in Skyline Conference play. Sarah Lawrence improves to 5-8 on the season and 3-3 in league play and now has three wins in the last four outings against the Knights.
 
First Half
  • The first half was tightly contested through the first 10 minutes and saw the Knights knot the score at 12-12 on a Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) bucket at the 9:28 mark.
  • Following the Cyran conversion, Sarah Lawrence ripped of the next 11 points to surge in front 23-12 on a Xiyuan Zhang three-pointer with 6:26 left before halftime.
  • A Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) jumper stopped the run, before the Gryphons used another 11-0 run to pull in front 34-14 on a pair of Amos Grey free-throws with just over three minutes left in the half.
  • Sarah Lawrence would hold a lead as large as 20 points on two more occasions in the closing three minutes of the first half before Cyran buried a three-pointer in the final minute to get the Mount to within 38-21 after 20 minutes of action.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the first half just 7-for-29 from the field with the Cyran triple late in the period accounting for the only three-pointer for the Knights in the half in 12 attempts.  
  • Sarah Lawrence shot 38.2-percent from the floor overall in the first half and connected on four of its 19 three-point attempts.
 
Second Half
  • Sarah Lawrence maintained a double-figure advantage in the second half until a J.P Egan (Lansdale, Pa.) conversion cut the Gryphons' advantage to 56-47with 8:48 left in regulation.
  • The Knights got the disadvantage down to 58-51 on a Cyran bucket with 5:09 left in regulation.
  • Yearwood buried a three-pointer with 3:30 left to get the Mount to within 60-56 before a Sienke bucket with 2:15 left got the Mount to within a single point at 60-59.
  • A pair of Zhang free-throws got Sarah Lawrence back out in front three and would not allow the Mount to draw even.
  • Trailing by three points, Figueroa cleaned up an offensive rebound and was fouled, bringing the Knights back to within a point again with a chance to tie at the free-throw line.
  • After missing the free-throw, Grey connected from the line for the Gryphons and the Knights were held without an attempt at the horn.
  • Mount Saint Mary improved to 41.5-percent shooting in the second half and outscored Sarah Lawrence 42-27 after halftime.
  • Sarah Lawrence converted at better than 45-percent after halftime, but went 1-for-6 from three-point range.
 
For The Knights
  • Yearwood finished the night 6-for-16 from the field with three triples on his way to a team-high 16 points. He added four rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Sienke and Cyran each finished the night with 14 points for the Mount with Sienke collecting seven rebounds and swiping four steals. Cyran finished with four caroms and a blocked shot.
  • Figueroa collected a game-high 19 rebounds and chipped in seven points.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Grey led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, adding four rebounds and two steals.
  • Zhang connected on four triples and finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
  • Justin Bailey added 11 points and five rebounds.
  • Liam Barry led all players with six assists, adding nine points and five rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the night shooting 34.3-percent overall, but went just 4-for-25 from three-point range.
  • Sarah Lawrence finished up at 41.1-percent overall and 20-percent from three-point range.
  • Both teams struggled from the free-throw line with Mount Saint Mary going 11-for-28 and Sarah Lawrence finishing 14-for-25.
