Knights Cruise Past St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn, Push Winning Streak To Seven

Smith matches career-high with 21 points

Newburgh, N.Y. – Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) led all players with 24 points and Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) matched her career-high with 21 tallies as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team eased to its seventh straight win with a 93-71 victory over visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Tuesday evening.
 
Tuesday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 11-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in Skyline Conference play and gives the Knights 12 wins in the last 14 meetings with the Bears.
 
First Half
  • The Knights opened a 15-7 lead on a Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) three-pointer with 4:24 left in the opening period.
  • The Bears would slice their disadvantage down to a single point, at 18-17, on a Grace Kennedy three-pointer and knotted the score at 20-20 on an Emma Kiley triple with 21 seconds left in the first frame.
  • Mount Saint Mary came right back with a Smith three-pointer with five seconds left in the first period to give the Knights a 23-20 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
  • The Knights shot 40.9-percent in the first quarter and connected on four three-point field goals.
  • Mount Saint Mary never trailed in the second period, but after seeing its lead dwindled to a single point, Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) drilled a triple to push the Knights in front 26-22.
  • The Mount's lead grew to double-figures for the first time when a Rivera three with 6:35 left before halftime moved the Knights in front 36-24.
  • The lead grew to a half-high 19 points on a Phelan jumper with 2:44 left in the second quarter before the Knights went to the intermission with a 49-33 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot an even 40-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and connected on eight three-point field goals.
  • St. Joseph's shot 42.9-percent and hit on five triples in the first half.
  • Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led all scorers at the break with 12 points on the strength of three triples in the first half.
 
Second Half
  • The Mount Saint Mary lead would not dip below 11 in the third period and grew as large as 18 twice in the third quarter.
  • K. Smith gave the Knights a 51-33 lead with a layup early in the frame and Bojka pushed the Mount in front 59-41 with a conversion at the 3:34 mark of the quarter.
  • After having its lead cut to 65-53 on a Grace Kennedy three in the closing seconds of the third, the Knights scored the first eight points of the final frame to open a 73-53 lead on a K.Smith bucket with 7:17 left to play.
  • The Mount's advantage went on the grow to a game-high 22 points twice in the final minute, once on a K. Smith jumper with 55 seconds left and again on a K. Smith conversion with 15 ticks left that gave the Knights the final 93-71 decision.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the second half shooting 43.9-percent despite a 2-for-14 effort from three-point range.
  • St. Joseph's shot 43.2-percent after halftime and knocked down five three-pointers.
  • Bojka scored 16 of her game-high point total after halftime, going 5-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.
  • Kiley scored 14 points for the Bears after the break on the strength of 7-for-15 shooting.
 
For The Knights
  • Bojka reached at least 20 points in a game for the third time this season after going 8-for-25 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. She narrowly missed a triple double after producing nine rebounds and seven assists.
  • Smith matched her career-high after going 10-for-18 from the floor, joining Bojka with a game-high seven assists.
  • E. Smith and Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) each contributed 14 points to the winning effort with Smith canning three triples and Desrats swiping five steals.
  • Gabriella Rafaniello (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out a strong game with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and four blocked shots off the bench.
 
For The Bears
  • Kiley led the way with 21 points after going 10-for-19 from the floor. She added nine rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot for the Bears.
  • Kennedy poured in 18 points, connecting on five three-pointers, adding seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
  • Fatima Monsour chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.
  • Jamie Provino totaled six points, nine rebounds and a team-high five assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary wrapped up the win shooting 41.9-percent from the field and knocked in 10 three-pointers.
  • St. Joseph's converted at 43.1-percent and also connected on 10 triples.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored the Bears 11-5 from the free-throw line.
  • The Knights outscored the Bears 36-26 in the paint and 28-2 in transition.
  • The Mount defense forced 29 turnovers, leading to a 29-4 edge in points off of miscues.

  • The Knights play host to Manhattanville Thursday evening.
