Knights Overwhelm Panthers, Run Winning Streak To Five Games

Knights allow fewest points since 2018

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team moved its winning streak to five games on Monday night following an 82-20 Skyline Conference victory over visiting Purchase. 14 different Knights scored in the game, led by a game-high 13 points from Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.).
 
Monday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 9-2 overall on the season and to 7-0 in Skyline Conference play. The 20 points allowed are the fewest since allowing 21 to Sarah Lawrence in a 93-21 triumph on January 13, 2018.
 
First Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary blanked the Panthers in the opening 10 minutes, taking a 29-0 advantage into the second frame.
  • The Mount shot an even 52-percent from the floor in the opening period and scored 15 points off of Purchase turnovers.
  • Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) scored the game's first six points and finished the opening period with eight tallies.
  • Smith canned a pair of three-pointers for the Mount in the opening 10 minutes of action.
 
Second Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary did not allow a field goal to Purchase until a Karina Medina three-pointer at the 8:41 mark of the second stanza.
  • Medina hit her second three-pointer of the quarter with 3:38 left in the period and accounted for the only two field goals of the first half for the Panthers.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored Purchase 26-6 in the second quarter, going 11-for-22 from the floor.
  • The Knights spread its lead to a half-high 49 points on an Alyssa Caswell (Fishkill, N.Y.) three-pointer in the final minute of the period to send the Mount into the intermission with a 55-6 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 51.1-percent in the opening 20 minutes and was led by 10 points off the bench from Smith.
  • Mount Saint Mary held Purchase to 10.5-percent shooting over the first two periods.
 
Third Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary did not allow its advantage to slip below 49 points in the third period.
  • The Knights converted at 40-percent overall in the third stanza and connected on three of their nine three-point field goals.
  • Ciarra Quinn (Bayside, N.Y.) pushed the Mount in front 69-11 with a layup at the 2:13 mark of the quarter and Kate Hughes sent the Knights to the fourth period with a 71-13 lead following a bucket with 64 seconds left in the frame.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored Purchase 16-7 in the quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary closed out the win with an 11-7 advantage in scoring in the final stanza, going 4-for-11 from the floor.
  • The Knights ballooned their advantage to a game-high 64 points twice in the final frame.
  • Brooke Leahy (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) gave the Mount a 77-13 lead with 3:30 left in regulation with a free-throw.
  • Katelyn McCann (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) canned a triple with 45 seconds left to push the Mount in front 82-16 before taking the final 82-20 decision.
 
For The Knights
  • Smith was the only player to finish in double-figures, scoring 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting, including a 3-for-6 effort from behind the arc.
  • Bojka finished with eight points, three steals and a pair of assists in seven minutes of action.
  • McCann drained a trio of triples, good for nine points.
  • Hughes wrapped up the victory with six points, six rebounds and three assists.
  • Gabriella Rafaniello (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all players with eight rebounds, adding six points, four assists, two blocked shots and three steals.
  • Charlotte Twohig (Syosset, N.Y.), Caswell and Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) all finished with six points for the Knights.
 
For The Panthers
  • Purchase was led by nine points each from Ariella Johnson and Medina.
  • Johnson added a team-high three steals.
  • Medina led the Panthers with seven rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 46.6-percent from the floor on the night, including a 10-for-28 effort from three-point range.
  • Purchase was held to 19.5-percent shooting (8-for-41) and did not take a free-throw in the game.
  • Mount Saint Mary forced 30 turnovers in the game, leading to a 39-7 advantage in points off of turnovers.
  • The Knights hauled in 25 offensive rebounds and translated those into 29 second chance points.
  • The Mount dominated inside with a 40-8 edge in paint points.
 
What's Next
  • Following the postponement of Wednesday's game with Manhattanville, the Mount will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Old Westbury.
  • Purchase is scheduled to host the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday.
