Mahwah, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team closed out play in the Roadrunner Invitational Saturday with a hard fought 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 11-25, 8-15 loss to FDU-Florham. Freshman
Jackie Wolf (Kings Park, N.Y.) had a big match, putting away a career-high 16 kills.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 8-6 overall on the season, while the Devils get back to the .500 mark at 6-6 overall.
First Set
- The Knights got off to a good start on Saturday, posting nine winners in the opening frame.
- The Mount erased an early 7-1 deficit, using a 6-1 run to jump in front 13-12.
- After falling behind 15-13, the Knights ripped off five straight points, keyed by a pair of Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) aces to jump back in front 18-15.
- After FDU-Florham pulled to within 22-20 late in the set, the Knights scored three of the final four points of the frame, capped off by a Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) kill, to open a 1-0 lead.
Second Set
- The Devils evened things in the second on the strength of a 14-7 advantage in kills in the set.
- The second set would go back-and-forth until 8-1 closing run for the Devils. Adrienne DeFuria keyed the stretch with two kills and an ace.
Third Set
- The Knights got back on track in the third set with 15 kills to grab a 2-1 advantage in the match.
- After the Devils used a five point run to pull in front 12-8, the Mount rallied with seven of the next eight points to move ahead 15-14. Wolf was in the middle of the run with three kills and an ace for the Knights.
- The two teams would stay within two points of each other until the Knights closed the stanza on a 5-1 spurt. Wolf totaled four kills over the stretch with Haley Houghton (Bellerose, N.Y.) adding a service ace.
Fourth Set
- The Devils hit .294 in the fourth set, while the Knight managed only five winners and hit .074.
- FDU-Florham had four runs of at least three points in the set, including an 8-0 surge that pushed it in front 15-5.
- Mount Saint Mary scored back-to-back points just four times in the frame and never scored more than two straight.
Fifth Set
- In the deciding frame, FDU-Florham, hit a blistering .444 and totaled 10 kills on 18 attacks.
- After scoring the first two points of the fifth, the Mount saw the Devils reel off six straight points to take the lead for good.
- A Jessica Garreffa ace gave FDU-Florham a 10-3 lead to close a 3-0 run and the Mount would not climb closer than five points the reminder of the set.
For The Knights
- Wolf posted a career-high 16 winners, hitting .204 in the contest. She added six digs, three blocks and a trio of service aces.
- Riddle continued her strong start to the season with a team-high 18 kills, matching the team-high with four aces and lifting 17 digs.
- Riddle and Wolf combined for 34 of the team's 39 kills on the day.
- Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out a 34 assists and joined Riddle with four aces to go along with 13 digs.
- Hydo totaled two aces, four blocks and a career-high 23 digs.
- Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) led the Mount with 25 digs, adding an ace.
For The Devils
- DeFuria led the team with 15 kills and 22 digs.
- Rachel Reiter contributed 12 kills, five digs and two blocks.
- Charlotte Fruscione chipped in 11 winners and added 20 digs.
- Erin Ahart handed out 24 assists and lifted 12 digs, while Kacie Ros added 21 helpers and 15 digs.
Match Statistics
- FDU-Florham finished with a 63-39 advantage in kills.
- Service aces went to the Knights by a 14-13 margin.
- Total team blocks also went the Mount's way 7-4.
What's Next
- The Knights play their first home match of the season on Tuesday when they play host to Farmingdale State at 7:00 p.m.
- FDU-Florham travels to King's (Pa.) on Tuesday for a MAC Freedom matchup.
