Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team opened the season with a convincing 8-1 non-conference win over Western Connecticut on Wednesday evening. The Knights took all three doubles points and five of the six singles decisions to earn the victory.
Mount Saint Mary got off to a strong start in the doubles portion of the match, opening a 3-0 lead. The top pair of
Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Julia Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) eased to an 8-2 victory with the second unit of
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and
Victoria Valencia (Floral Park, N.Y.) posting an 8-0 sweep.
Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) and
Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) earned a third doubles win by default.
The Mount took the top three singles flights on Wednesday with Murray opening the year with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win at the top flight.
Flynn picked up where she left off in the spring with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of her opponent at the second slot and Green took care of her third singles opponent by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
Valencia clinched the win for the Knights with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the fifth position and Imperio got into the win column with a sixth singles win by default for the Knights.
At 1-0 on the season, Mount Saint Mary will return to action on Friday when they head north to Bard. First serve with the Raptors is set for 4:00 p.m.
