Box Score Newburgh, N.Y. – An own goal off a Fredonia defender late in the second overtime period sent the Mount Mary College Men's Soccer team to a 1-0 victory on Friday in their opening game of the 2021 Blue Devil Classic. The victory is the first for the Knights since a 2-1 win in double overtime against Farmingdale State on November 6, 2019.
Friday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 1-2 overall on the season and gives it its second straight win over Fredonia with the last coming in 2014. The victory also brings head coach
Kevin Longacre to within one of 100 with the Knights. The Blue Devils drop to 1-2 and have opened the season with three straight overtime contests.
First Half
- The Knights, who were held to just six shots over the previous two games, got off 11 attempts in the first half on Friday.
- Mount Saint Mary forced Fredonia keeper William Richardson to make six saves prior to the break.
- Zach Decker (Red Hook, N.Y.) finished the opening 45 minutes with a pair of saves.
- Both keepers made saves in the latter stages of the first half to keep the game scoreless, including Decker who denied Michael Ranieri with less than two minutes left before the intermission.
- Corner kicks in the opening period were even at 1-1.
Second Half
- The Blue Devils finished the second half with a 9-4 advantage in shots, but Decker was forced to make just one save.
- Richardson stopped three shots in the second stanza to keep the game scoreless through regulation time.
- Richardson's final save of regulation came on a Peter Ramirez (Newburgh, N.Y.) attempt with under four minutes left.
- Corner kicks in the second half went to Fredonia 4-2.
Overtime Periods
- Mount Saint Mary outshot the Blue Devils 4-1 in the two overtime periods, including 2-0 in the deciding second extra session.
- Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) had the two best chances of the first overtime period, pushing a shot wide and then firing a shot over the target off a corner kick in the final half minute.
- Richardson denied J.C. Lopez (East Islip, N.Y.) at the 104:28 mark of the match to keep the game scoreless.
- After a Fredonia corner kick, the Knights broke out and when Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) attempted a crossing pass, a Fredonia defender knocked the ball into the lower right corner to send the Knights to the 1-0 victory.
For The Knights
- Ramirez led the team with four shots, including two on goal.
- Mesoraca, Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.), Doyle and Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) all recorded three shots.
- Decker picks up his first shutout as a Knight, making three saves in the game.
For Fredonia
- Jackson Retzer led the Blue Devils with five shots in the game.
- Richardson suffered the hard luck loss in goal, stopping nine Mount Saint Mary shots.
Match Statistics
- The Knights finished with a 19-15 edge in overall shots, but dominated shots on goal 11-3.
- Corner kicks in the match went to Fredonia 7-4.
- Fouls in the match were whistled 10-7 against the Knights.
