Knights Stay Alive With Win Over St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Killeen drives in two, Morris fans six

Farmingdale, N.Y. – Facing elimination for the first time in 2021 Skyline Conference Championship, the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team earned a 3-1 win over St. Joseph's-L.I. Friday afternoon. Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove in two runs for the Knights with freshman Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) striking out six.

After falling behind 1-0 after an inning, Mount Saint Mary took the lead for good in the home half of the second. Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) walked to start the inning and following a walk to Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.) and a groundout that advanced the runners, Killeen chased them both home with a two-out, two-run double to push the Knights in front 2-1.

The Mount tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when Samantha Bendig (Bellmore, N.Y.) launched her team leading fourth home of the season to lead off the frame. The Knights had another runner in scoring position, but settled for just one run in the fifth. Morris did the rest, retiring the side in order in both the sixth and seventh frames.

Bendig finished the game 1-for-2 with a run, RBI and walk, raising her batting average to .413 on the season while driving in her 26th run.

Killeen recorded a double and two RBI, giving her 15 on the season, with Morgan O'Neill ripping a double and finishing the contest 2-for-4. Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) also finished 2-for-4 for the Knights with Gannon and Ferara each scoring a run.

After taking a tough luck loss in the first game of the day, Morris stifled the Golden Eagles in her first elimination appearance, working her ninth complete game of the season. In 7.0 innings of work, she allowed just one run on three hits, adding six strikeouts as she moved to 11-7 on the season.

Friday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 17-11 overall on the season. The Knights will look to stave off elimination again on Saturday when they take on the loser of the Manhattanville and Farmingdale State contest. First pitch is set for approximately 2:00 p.m.
