Knights Drop Doubleheader To Old Westbury On Senior Day

Borriello works complete game in opener; Mirra scores four times in game two

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team closed out the home schedule on Saturday with 3-1 and 10-6 Skyline Conference losses to Old Westbury on Senior Day. Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) worked a complete game in the opener with Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) recording three hits and scoring four runs in game two.

Game 1: Old Westbury 3 – Mount Saint Mary 1
The starting pitchers were the story in game one on Saturday with Borreillo and Old Westbury righty Tim Woodford each going the distance for their respective clubs. Borriello allowed one earned run in 7.0 innings on five hits for the Knights to go along with one strikeout.

Woodford was also impressive on Saturday as he moved to 3-0 on the season. His complete game win saw him allow six hits and one unearned run. He did not walk a batter and struck out five Knights.

Old Westbury got on the board first in game one, taking advantage of a double, two walks and a fielding error in the top of the first inning. John Dell'Olio connected on a one-out double to right center and later scored the game's first run when Drew Robertson drew a two-out bases loaded walk.

The 1-0 advantage held until the Knights got even in the bottom of the fourth inning with their only run of the game. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) opened the frame with an infield single and moved along to second on a throwing error. Goodwin got to third on a fly out and later came home on a single to right center field off the bat of Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Mount Saint Mary would push the go-ahead run to third in the fifth, but could not get it home before Old Westbury plated single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to open the final two-run advantage. Charlie Eisele singled home a run in the sixth to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead and Shaun Kaminski plated a run with a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring in the game.

Goodwin, Tait and Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) all finished the opener with two hits with Goodwin scoring a run and Tait recording the team's lone RBI. Franco added a stolen base in the game for the Knights.

Dell'Olio had a hit and scored twice for Old Westbury with Jacob Taormina leading the Panthers with two hits.

Game 2: Old Westbury 10 – Mount Saint Mary 6
After the game one pitcher's duel, the Panthers broke open a 6-0 lead in the top of the first in the backend of Saturday's set. The Panthers strung together five hits in the inning, including consecutive run scoring safeties from Kaminski, Oscar Fajardo and Robertson. Eisele drove home two runs in the frame with a single ahead of a base hit from Taormina that delivered the sixth run of the inning with two outs.

Mount Saint Mary responded with three tallies in the bottom of the first to slice its deficit in half quickly. Mirra led off with a walk and Goodwin doubled to give the Knights runners at second and third with no one out. After Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) was hit to load the bases, Tait forced in a run with a walk. Goodwin later scored on a wild pitch before Franco drove in Marzigliano with a single to get the Knights to within 6-3.

Mount Saint Mary got a run closer in the second on a sacrifice fly from Marzigliano and after the Panthers moved in front 7-4 in the third, the Knights pulled to within a run with single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings. Marzigliano delivered a run in the fourth with a single up the middle before Mirra scampered home on a wild pitch in the sixth to bring the Knights to within 7-6 with three at-bats left.

Leading by a run, Old Westbury opened the final four-run lead in the top of the eighth with a trio of unearned runs. With the bases loaded and two outs Brandon Wilson reached on an error that saw two runs score before Kaminski drove home a run with a two-out single to push the Panthers in front 10-6. Mount Saint Mary would get a runner on base in both the eighth and ninth frames but could not move it into scoring position.

Mirra closed game two 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored with Goodwin going 3-for-5 with a double and run scored. Marzigliano added two more hits with a run and two RBI. Franco added two more hits in game two and another stolen base.

Kaminski finished up game two 4-for-5 with two RBI for Old Westbury with Robertson adding two hits and two runs scored. Four different Panthers finished the game with at least one hit and one run scored.

Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) suffered the loss in game two, falling to 1-2 on the season. He allowed only two earned runs in 6.0 innings on eight hits and struck out three. Joe Sarni picked up the win in relief with 4.1 innings of work out of the pen, allowing two runs and striking out seven. Justin Aviles recorded the save with 3.2 scoreless innings of work that featured six strikeouts.

Saturday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 9-9 overall and to 7-8 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights and Panthers will conclude the weekend series on Sunday starting at 12:00 p.m.
