Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team opened its home scheduled on Friday night with a 19-3 home loss to visiting Farmingdale State. Three different Knights scored in the game with freshman
Kaitlyn DeLorenzo (Southington, Conn.) leading the Mount with two points.
Farmingdale State got off to a fast start when Sam Shelton won the opening draw and scored 10 seconds into the tilt to give the Rams the lead for good in the game. The visitors potted the first six goals of the contest before
Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) got the Mount on the board just under 10 minutes into the game.
The Rams responded with the next three goals before
Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) tallied with the man advantage to bring the Knights to within 9-2 with 14:19 left before halftime. DeLorenzo scored with 1:24 left in the period for the Mount, but the Rams tallied three of the final four goals of the stanza to carry a 13-3 advantage into the intermission.
Farmingdale State controlled play in the first 30 minutes, outshooting the Mount 26-5 to go along with 13 draw controls and 12 groundballs.
The Rams potted the only six goals of the second half and held the Mount to just three shots while winning three more draw controls and collecting 10 more groundballs.
DeLorenzo finished the night with two points and is now tied with Shalvey for the team lead in goals with four while holding the team lead in points with seven.
Kate Crooker (Selbyville, Del.) led the Knights with a pair of caused turnovers, while
Britany Dones (Middletown, N.Y.) won five draw controls.
Courtney Gendels led the Rams with eight goals with Deanna Ionnotta tallying three times and assisting on six other markers. Shelton added three goals and four points for the visitors while winning a game-high six draw controls.
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal, making six saves and collecting three groundballs. Ashley Perrini picked up the win with five stops for the Rams.
Overall, Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the game 39-8 with Farmingdale State also holding the edge in groundballs, 22-11, and draw controls 16-7.
Friday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-1 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Maritime on April 12. Opening Draw with the Privateers is set for 7:00 p.m.
