Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team suffered its second straight loss on Monday night following a 16-6 road loss at Maritime. Junior
Britany Dones (Middletown, N.Y.) paced the Knights with two goals on the night.
Maritime raced out to a 7-0 lead in the game over the first 11:14 of play, with Sara Wright scoring four times and assisting on another goal.
Carolyn Del Debbio (Plantsville, N.Y.) stopped the Maritime run at the 16:37 mark of the first half to get the Mount on the board.
The Privateers answered with the next five goals to close the opening 30 minutes and carry a 12-1 advantage into the intermission. Jessica Fraccalvieri and Avery Jillson Neuwirth sparked the half closing run for Maritime with two goals apiece.
Maritime finished the opening stanza with a 23-9 advantage in shots and a commanding 13-1edge in draw controls. Mount Saint Mary wrapped up the first period with a slim 5-3 advantage in groundballs.
After Maritime tallied the first two goals of the second half, the Mount ripped off the next four goals and five of the final seven of regulation time to close the game. Dones,
Kaitlyn DeLorenzo (Southington, Conn.),
Ella Garner (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and
Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored consecutive goals just over seven minutes apart with Dones adding her second of the game in the closing seconds of the contest.
Dones led five different goal scorers with two tallies and added a draw control for the Knights. Garner potted her first career goal for the Knights with
Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) recording her team leading fourth assist of the season.
Wright finished the game with five goals and eight points for Maritime with Johnson tallying four times and assisting on a fifth goal. Johnson recorded a game-high nine draw controls and combined with Wright for 17 of the team's 18 draws in the contest.
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) finished the night with 12 saves in goal for the Knights and paced the team with a pair of groundballs. Elizabeth Pomaro picked up the win between the pipes for Maritime with seven stops.
Maritime closed the night with a 39-17 advantage in overall shots and a 28-13 edge in shots on goal. The Privateers dominated draw controls 18-3 and posted a slim 9-7 advantage in groundballs.
Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-2 both overall and in Skyline Conference play. The Knights look to get back to the .500 mark on the season on Friday when they travel to Manhattanville. Opening Draw with the Valiants is set for 3:30 p.m.
