Baseball Has Six Game Winning Streak Stopped At St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Mirra, Tait record two hits apiece in game two

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team had its six game winning streak halted on Saturday afternoon following 7-2 and 12-2 Skyline Conference losses at St. Joseph's-L.I. Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) and Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) each finished game two with a pair of hits for the Mount.
 
Game 1: St. Joseph's 7 – Mount Saint Mary 2
The Knights got off to a good start in the opener, plating a run in their first at-bat to take an early 1-0 advantage. With two outs and no one on base Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) reached on an error and moved along to second on a failed pickoff. Tait promptly drove Marzigliano in with a single to open the scoring in the game.
 
Mount Saint Mary grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second when Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) laced a one-out triple and later scored on a Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to double the lead.
 
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the home half of the second and tacked on two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to pull away for the game one victory. Ryan Decoursey got St. Joseph's on the board with a run scoring single in the second and delivered a three-run double in the fifth.
 
Decoursey finished the opener 3-for-3 with a run and four RBI for the Golden Eagles with Charles Rainone finishing up 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
Five different Knights collected hits in game one on Saturday with Tait going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Mirra, Joe Stewart (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Franco and DiGiovanni added base hits with DiGiovanni recordiung the team's only other RBI. Marzigliano and Franco accounted for the team's runs.
 
Anthony Pacifico (Newburgh, N.Y.) suffered the loss in game one after allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out two for the Knights. Anthony Cinquemani earned the win in relief for St. Joseph's with 2.0 scoreless frames.
 
Game 2: St. Joseph's 12 – Mount Saint Mary 2 (7 innings)
The Golden Eagles opened an early lead in the backend of Saturday's set, plating six runs in the home half of the second inning. St. Joseph's recorded seven hits in the frame with Justin Stromski delivering two runs with a single and Joe Sanguedolce opening the game up with a three-run home run.
 
The Golden Eagles pushed its lead to 7-0 in the third before the Knights plated its only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth. Tait led off the inning with a double and later scored the team's first run on an RBI single from Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.). Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) was pushed across with the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout from Franco to get the Mount to within 6-2.
 
St. Joseph's responded with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth and closed the game out with a run in the seventh. Dante DiMarco pushed the Golden Eagles in front by 10 with a sacrifice fly in the home half of the seventh to end the contest.
 
Mirra finished game two 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with Tait going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Franco doubled for the Knights and Merlin scored the other run after drawing one of just three walks in the game.
 
Sanguedolce had a big day at the plate in game two, finishing with five RBI and was one of five players with at least two hits for the Golden Eagles. Decoursey wrapped up a strong day 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
 
Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) took the loss and fell to 2-2 after allowing six earned runs on nine hits in 2.0 innings. Anthony Collura (Franklin Square, N.Y.) worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Knights. Daniel Deckert picked up the win, his third of the year, after striking out seven in 6.0 innings.
 
At 8-7 overall and 6-6 in conference play, the Knights are set to host St. Joseph's on Sunday to close out the weekend series. With inclement weather in the forecast, the Knights and Golden Eagles will play a single nine inning game on Sunday starting at 3:00 p.m.
