Women’s Tennis Tops Yeshiva, 8-1

Knights win second straight to start season

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team scored its second straight win to open the season on Sunday afternoon with an impressive 8-1 win over league rival Yeshiva. The Knights swept the three doubles matches and proceeded to win five of the six singles matches in the victory.

The Mount got off to a strong start on Sunday with three impressive doubles victories. The third pair of Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and Jesslayn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) dispatched their opponents 8-0 to get the Mount out to a 1-0 lead with the top flight of Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) and Antionetta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) following with an 8-5 victory. The second pair of Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Julia Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win of their own for the Mount.

The Knights continued their strong play in the singles competition and clinched the victory with wins from Flynn and Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) at the fifth and sixth positions. Flynn posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep with Imperio collecting a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.

Yeshiva got on the board with a first singles victory before the Mount closed out the day with wins at the fourth, third and second positions. Goetz scored a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win at the fourth slot with Green following with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the third position. Murray earned the team's final win of the day after battling to a 6-4, 6-3 second singles win.

At 2-0 both overall and in conference play, Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Purchase. First serve with the Panthers is slated for 4:00 p.m.
