Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team opened the season in strong fashion on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 Skyline Conference win over visiting Sarah Lawrence.
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) earned her first win of the season at the first singles flight.
Murray, coming off Second Team All-Skyline Conference selections in her first two seasons, moved up to the first flight as a junior. She scored an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win to begin the season for the Knights.
Playing in her first match for the Knights,
Julia Flynn clinched the win for the Mount with a victory at the fourth flight. She outlasted her opponent from Sarah Lawrence by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to move to 1-0 on the season.
Mount Saint Mary also received a single win on Saturday from
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) at the third position. She won her initial match of the season by a score of 6-1, 6-4 for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary got off to a 2-1 lead after doubles competition after collecting victories at the second and third positions. The second pair of
Carly Green and Flynn posted a 9-7 victory for the Mount while Murray and
Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) dispatched their third position opponent by a score of 8-5.
At 1-0 on the season, Mount Saint Mary will return to action on April 14 when they play host to Purchase. First serve with the Panthers is slated for 2:00 p.m.
