Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team was edged in five sets in the First Round of the Skyline Conference Championship, falling to the College of Mount Saint Vincent 25-19, 24-26, 26-24, 16-25, 13-15 Tuesday night. Junior
Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) put away a match-high 19 kills for the Knights and in the process set the program's single season kills record with 451 on the year.
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 14-15 overall on the season, while Mount Saint Vincent improves to 16-11 and advances to the Semifinal Round against top seeded USMMA on Thursday night.
First Set
- The Mount got out to a 1-0 lead after putting away 13 kills in the opening stanza.
- The Knights used a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to open a 13-8 advantage.
- A 4-1 spurt capped by kills from Riddle and Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) pushed the Mount in front 20-14.
- Jackie Wolf (Kings Park, N.Y.) and Riddle closed out the set with winners for the Mount.
- Wolf put away seven winners in the first frame and hit .429.
- The Knights held a 5-0 advantage in service aces in the first, led by two each from KayLani Baynes (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.).
Second Set
- Mount Saint Vincent evened the match at 1-1 with 14 kills, hitting .286 as a team in the second set.
- The Knights jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but saw the Dolphins answer with a 7-1 run of their own to grab a 15-12 advantage.
- Mount Saint Mary battled back to tie the score four times after falling behind, but a Dez Brown kill and a Mount Saint Mary miscue sent the Dolphins to a 26-24 victory.
- Brown and Samantha Schroeder led the way for the Dolphins in the second with four kills apiece.
Third Set
- Mount Saint Mary grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third despite putting away just seven kills.
- The Knights overcame a 14-11 deficit with a 5-0 run keyed by a pair of service aces from Barbara.
- The Dolphins surged back in front 20-17 and maintained the advantage until the Knights closed with a 5-1 run to steal the frame.
- Barbara tied the score at 24-24 with an ace and Wolf put the frame away with her sixth winner of the set.
- Wolf had six of the Mount's seven kills in the third frame and hit a blistering .556.
- Barbara rounded out the frame with a trio of aces for the Knights.
Fourth Set
- Mount Saint Vincent evened the set for a second time, controlling the fourth frame with 12 kills while hitting .321 as a team.
- The Dolphins jumped out to an 11-2 lead and did not let the Knights closer than four points the rest of the way.
- After the Knights closed to within 21-15, the Dolphins scored four of the final five points of the set, capped off by a Brown winner that sealed the victory.
- Five different Dolphins finished the frame with two kills.
- Riddle produced all five of the Mount's kills in the fourth.
Fifth Set
- The Knights started quickly in the deciding set, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead.
- The advantage grew to 7-1 and to 11-4 following a 3-0 spurt sparked by kills from Riddle and Hydo.
- Mount Saint Vincent used a 5-1 run to slice its deficit to 12-7, but a Dolphin attack error brought the Knights to within two points of victory.
- Mount Saint Vincent went on to score the final six points of the set to pull out the 15-13 victory.
- Schroeder put away two kills for the visitors in the closing run.
- Riddle finished the fifth set with five winners and hit .444, breaking the record with a kill that pushed the Knights in front 9-4.
For The Knights
- Riddle put away 10 kills over the final two sets to round out the night with a match-high 19 winners. She closed out the night with nine digs, two blocks and an ace for the Mount.
- Riddle broke a single season mark set by Amanda Carfora in 2007 by a single winner, setting the new standard of 451.
- Wolf had a big match for the Mount with 16 kills, one off her career-high that was set in the regular season contest with the Dolphins. She added five aces, a block and 13 digs for the Mount.
- Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 34 assists for the Knights and chipped in three aces and nine digs.
- Hydo led the team with four blocks and lifted 12 digs.
- Haley Houghton (Bellerose, N.Y.) recorded three blocks for the Knights.
- Barbara closed the evening with 12 digs and a team-high six service aces.
For The Dolphins
- Schroeder led the team with 15 kills, adding an ace and 15 digs.
- Brown put away 14 winners for the Dolphins and totaled a pair of blocks.
- Lindsay DeBoer rounded out a trio in double-figures in kills with 10.
- Madison Gale led all players with 45 assists to go along with nine digs and two aces.
- Isabella Garcia recorded a match-high 23 digs and posted a pair of aces.
Match Statistics
- Mount Saint Vincent finished the match with a 57-43 advantage in kills and hit .243 as a unit against a .113 showing for the Knights.
- Service aces in the match went to the Knights by a 17-10 count.
- Mount Saint Mary finished with a tight 7-5 advantage in total team blocks.
