Knights Earn Hard Fought Victory Over Yeshiva

Green improves record to 7-0

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team picked up its first conference win of the season on Tuesday, battling past Yeshiva 5-4. Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.) clinched the team victory and remained unbeaten in singles play with a win at third singles.

After dropping two of the three doubles points to the Maccabees, the Mount rallied to take four of the six singles points to sneak out with the victory. After suffering her first doubles loss of the season, a tough 8-6 decision at the second slot with Victoria Valencia (Floral Park, N.Y.), senior Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) roared back with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles.

Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Green controlled their matches at fourth and third singles, respectively. Monahan cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win, her second singles win of the year, while Green clinched the team win and pushed her record to 7-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the third slot.

Although the Mount dropped the two doubles matches contested, both pairs battled hard in defeat. The top pair of Julia Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Green suffered an 8-7 loss in a tiebreaker, while Murray and Valencia rallied from an 0-2 deficit and a medical timeout, before falling in a tight 8-6 result.

Tuesday's victory improves Mount Saint Mary to 5-2 overall on the season and to 1-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home match with Manhattanville on Thursday. Doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
