Newburgh, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) made his way into the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer record book twice on Tuesday, setting the program's single season and career records in a 4-0 win over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Wyant recorded his 12th and 13th helpers on the season in the win and his 26th career assist on the Mount's fourth goal of the evening.
Tuesday's win, the Mount's sixth straight over the Bears, improves it to 9-6-1 overall on the season and to 8-2-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will await Thursday's results for seeding and matchups in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship.
First Half
- Neither team would score in the opening 45 minutes, with the two sides splitting 10 shots evenly at five apiece.
- The Mount's best chance came in the 26th minute when Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) rang a shot off the cross bar.
- Corner kicks in the first half went to the Knights 1-0.
- Zach Decker (Red Hook, N.Y.) rounded out the opening period with two saves for the Knights.
Second Half
- Mount Saint Mary got on the board early in the second half, when Nick Biagini (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored his first career goal just 14 seconds into the second half. Wyant assisted on the goal, tying the single season record, as the Mount opened a 1-0 lead.
- Wyant added his fifth goal of the season in the 69th minute when he rifled a pass from Jack Perna (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) home at 68:08 to push the Knights in front 2-0.
- Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) pushed the advantage to three goals with five minutes left in regulation with his second tally of the year. Biagini played a ball to the far post that Mesoraca deposited at 85 minutes.
- After not scoring in two straight games, Doyle got back onto the scoresheet for the Knights in the 88th minute. He finished off a pretty passing play from Biagini and Wyant at 87:50 to close out the scoring in the game.
- Mount Saint Mary dominated shots in the second half, 13-2.
- Second half corner kicks also went to the Mount, 6-1.
- Decker made a single save to preserve the shutout after halftime.
For The Knights
- Wyant moved his league lead in assists to 13 and broke a record set by Mount Saint Mary Hall of Famer Brandon Mincher in 2013. His two helpers also pushed him clear of the previous career record of 24 set by Ed Hanley in 1993.
- Wyant finished the game with four points, scoring once and assisting on two goals.
- Biagini closed out a four-point night with a goal and two assists, posting his second multiple point game of the season and scoring his first career game winning goal.
- Mesoraca scored for the second time in 2021.
- Doyle potted his 16th goal of the year, moving his team lead in points to 32. He stands two goals shy of tying the single season record of 18 set by assistant coach Joey Dolan in 2017.
- Decker closed the night with three saves and produced his sixth shutout of the season.
For The Bears
- Jesus Cano and Menzi Simelane led the team with two shots apiece.
- Alejandro Oliveros closed the night with eight saves in goal for the Bears.
