Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team opened the home schedule on Wednesday with a 15-8 non-conference loss to visiting Ramapo. Senior
Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) turned in a strong night with four points for the Knights.
In a tightly contested first half, the Mount opened the scoring with two straight goals to grab its only lead of the night. Condron scored her first of the season just under six minutes into the tilt and sophomore
Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) added her first of the year just over a minute later to get the Mount in front 2-0.
Ramapo answered with three straight goals in under a minute to surge in front 3-2 8:50 into the contest. Nicole jaskot keyed the run with a goal and an assist for the Roadrunners who would never trail again in the game.
Mount Saint Mary would knot the score twice heading into the break, once on a
Cat Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) marker that evened things at 3-3 with 19:01 left in the half and then again on a
Liz Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) tally that knotted the score at 5-5 with 4:50 left before the break.
Ramapo had the answer again in the final 3:09 of the half when Lauren Armellino scored her fourth goal of the season to give the visitors the halftime advantage at 6-5.
The visitors closed out the opening 30 minutes with a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 17-8 edge in groundballs. The Mount went to the break with a 7-5 advantage in draw controls.
Coming out of the break, the Mount scored two of the first three goals to get the game to 7-7, but Ramapo ripped off six straight goals to surge in front 13-7 with 11:28 left to play. The Mount was limited to just three second half goals, with Condron scoring twice and Shalvey adding her second of the game at the 9:22 mark of the second half.
Condron broke into the scoring column in a big way on Wednesday, netting a hat trick and assisting on a goal for a team-high four points. She added a groundball and five draw control for the Knights. Shalvey potted two goals for the Mount with L. Halpin,
Cat Halpin and
Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) accounting for the rest of the scoring. Shalvey finished off a three-point game with an assist for the Mount.
Cat Halpin paced the Mount with three groundballs in the game with L. Halpin adding four draw controls.
Nicole Cervone (Shirley, N.Y.),
Carrie Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) and
Anne Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) all finished the night with a pair of groundballs.
Ramapo was led by four goals apiece from Taylor Peracchio and Colleen Mason with Mason adding an assist for a five-point night. Danielle Dellapi picked up a game-high six groundballs with Armellino finishing with two points and six draw controls.
Both goalies had busy nights on Wednesday, with Ramapo's Alexandra Kerwin earning the win with 15 saves.
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) suffered the hard luck loss with 14 stops while adding two groundballs and a caused turnover.
Ramapo finished the game with the edge in shots 36-26, shots on goal 29-23, free position goals 3-1 and groundballs 30-16, while the Mount held a slim 13-12 advantage in draw controls. The Knights finished the tilt 13-for-18 in clearing chances with the Roadrunners going 16-for-24.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 0-2 overall on the season. The Knights return to the road on Saturday when they head to local rival Bard. Opening Draw with the Raptors is set for 1:00 p.m.
