Baseball Outslugs NJCU For Second Win Of The Year

Team slugs out 22 hits on the game

Fishkill, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team slugged its way to a win on Wednesday night as the Knights defeated NJCU 15-5 at Dutchess Stadium. Junior Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) led the way with four hits as each starter had at least two hits on the game.

The Knights exploded in the first inning and batted around while putting up eight runs on eight hits. The inning was capped by an Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) two RBI triple that scored Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) and Joe Stewart (Valley Stream, N.Y.).

The Gothic Knights put up a run in the top of the second as Brandon Rivera scored after he stole third and scored on a throwing error. NJCU cut the lead to three with four runs in the third inning as Bill Feehan, Rivera and Joe Valentine singled home runs.

The Mount put together another big inning in the bottom half of the third as Franco scored on a double steal before Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove a ball to the center field wall and came all the way around for an inside the park home run to put the Knights up 11-5. Senior Michael Doxey (Highland, N.Y.) tripled home a run with one out to push the Knights up seven runs after three innings.

Mount Saint Mary put two more runs on the board in the fourth as Anthony Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) doubled home Brust and then scored on a Mirra triple just one at-bat later. Both teams remained off the board until the bottom of the seventh when Doxey tripled for the second time in the game and knocked in Mirra.

Each player in the starting lineup had at least two hits as Mirra finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Doxey finished 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two extra base hits. Mount Saint Mary finished with 12 runs batted in on the day and had six extra base hits.

The Gothic Knights were led by Justin Wiltsey who had three hits, including a triple. Rivera finished with two runs scored and Feehan added two hits.

Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) started for the Mount as he lasted 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out three. James Murphy (Montgomery, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate win as he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits and punched out five.

Wiltsey took the loss on the mound for NJCU as he lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.

At 2-2 overall, the Mount returns to action at Dutchess Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader with local foe New Paltz. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
