Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener Against Hartwick

L. Halpin scores both goals for the Knights

Oneonta, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team opened the 2020 campaign on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 15-2 contest against Hartwick. Senior Liz Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) scored both goals for the Knights in the loss.

The Hawks opened up the scoring early and often as Hartwick scored the first four goals of the game in the first 10 minutes. Hartwick scored all 10 goals in the first half as Rachel Hedden's goal with 1:14 remaining put the Hawks up 10.

Hartwick continued the scoring early in the second half as Alexa Matarazzo's goal put the host Hawks up 13-0 with 21:54 left in the half before L. Halpin scored the first goal of the season for the Knights at the 15:50 mark.

The Hawks pushed the lead out to 15-1 on Matarazzo's second goal of the game at 5:32 before L. Halpin found the back of the net for the second time with 3:28 left in the game.

L. Halpin finished with two goals on six shots, including three shots on goal. Freshman Cat Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and Carolyn Del Debbio (Plantsville, N.Y.) each registered two shots on goal while Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) also registered a shot on goal. Cat Halpin and Ward each picked up three ground balls while five different players had a caused turnover. L. Halpin led the team in draw controls with six.

GinaMarie Wilson tallied three goals and two assists for the Hawks while Amy Tracy produced a six point day with one goal and five assists. Wilson and Cassie Durkin each picked up a team-high three ground balls while Wilson won a team-high five draw controls.

Ashley Jablonowski picked up the win as she made five saves in her 30 minutes of action. Jennifer Paszko made two saves in relief in the second half for the Hawks. Junior Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) took the loss as she made nine saves and picked up four ground balls for the Knights.

At 0-1 on the season, the Mount plays its home opener on Wednesday evening against non-conference foe Ramapo. The contest with the Roadrunners is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Kaplan Field.
