St. Mary's City, Md. - The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday as the Knights dropped an 8-6 contest against St. Mary's (Md.). Junior
Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 and scored two runs in the loss for the Mount.
The Knights got on the board in the first inning as
Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) each singled to start the inning. Mirra would later score on a wild pitch and Tait scored on a
Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to put the Mount up 2-0.
The Seahawks put up a crooked number in the third inning as St. Mary's put up five runs on three hits, two walks and two hit by pitches. Joey Bryner drove in two with a single and Brady Waters drove in a run with a single of his own.
The Mount cut the lead down to one on an RBI groundout by
Anthony Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) in the fourth but the Seahawks pushed the lead back to two on a Jay Hammett RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
St. Mary's extended its lead to four in the bottom of the fifth as Drew Waters doubled home two runs with nobody out. The Mount was able to add a run in the seventh inning on a
Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) single through the right side and got one more in the eighth on a Tait RBI groundout but were unable to regain the lead.
Goodwin finished with two singles, two runs scored and a walk for the Knights while Mirra and Marzigliano each added two hits on the day. Five different players drove in a run for the Mount. Waters had two hits and two runs batted in for the Seahawks and Bryner also drove in two runs. Eight different players scored a run for St. Mary's (Md.).
Anthony Pacifico (Newburgh, N.Y.) took the loss for the Knights as he allowed six runs on six hits and four walks.
James Murphy (Montgomery, N.Y.) tossed three shutout innings in relief in his Mount Saint Mary debut.
Jake Sandridge earned the win for the Seahawks as he tossed five innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Waters picked up his first save of the season in two innings of work, allowing just one run on one hit and struck out two.
At 1-1 overall, the Mount will return to the diamond on Saturday when they play host in a doubleheader with Marywood at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
