Knights Win Third Straight Over Old Westbury

Bojka and Keenan each tally double-doubles

Newburgh, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team tallied its third straight victory on Wednesday evening as the Knights topped Old Westbury 53-37 at the Kaplan Center. Junior Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) and sophomore Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) each registered double-doubles with the Mount winning its 38th straight regular season Skyline Conference contest.

The Knights dominated the first quarter as Old Westbury was held to just one made field goal and it came at the 6:47 mark of the period. Mount Saint Mary scored the final 16 points of the quarter with Bojka and Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) each talling five points in the quarter. The Knights forced 10 Panther turnovers in the first quarter and held them to 1-for-7 from the field.

Old Westbury countered with a quick 9-2 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter to cut the lead to nine points before a Keenan jumper ended the spurt. The lead was cut to seven points twice in the quarter before a Bojka bucket to end the second quarter with a 30-21 lead.

Bojka led the way in the first half with eight points while Keenan tallied four points, three steals and eight rebounds. Desrats added seven points in the half while Davida Warren led the way for Old Westbury with seven points and seven rebounds. The Mount shot 31.7-percent from the field and knocked down four triples while the Panthers finished at 31.3-percent and just one triple.

The Knights began the third quarter on a 13-0 run to open up a 43-21 lead with 5:22 left in the quarter on five points from Keenan and four points apiece from Desrats and Bojka. The Panthers were limited to just four points in the quarter on just 2-for-8 from the field and committed eight turnovers.

Old Westbury scored six straight points to start the fourth quarter as the lead was cut to 13 on a Paige Brown lay-in. Senior Lyndsay Pace (Cranford, N.J.) buried a triple to stop the early run as the Panthers never got the lead below 16 points in the final five minutes.

Keenan tallied seven points and six rebounds in the second half while Bojka added four points and eight boards. Warren scored 11 points in the second half for the Panthers as Old Westbury made just five field goals in the second half. The Knights shot just 27.8-percent in the half and was 2-for-14 from the three-point line.

Bojka finished the evening with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Keenan added 11 points and 14 rebounds for Mount Saint Mary. Desrats and Pace each added 11 points while sophomore Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) chipped in four assists and four steals. 

Warren registered a double-double of her own for the Panthers as she finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Ja'Nya Flash also tallied 14 rebounds for Old Westbury.

The Panthers were limited to just 27.8-percent shooting on the evening and made just one three-pointer while Mount Saint Mary shot 29.9-percent from the field and was 6-for-30 from three-point range. The Knights held a 23-10 points off turnovers advantage as well as a 15-9 edge in second chance points. 

Both teams dominated on the offensive glass as Old Westbury grabbed 20 offensive rebounds while the Mount tallied 22 offensive boards. Mount Saint Mary outscored the Panthers 32-26 in points in the paint while assisting on 12 of the 23 made field goals.

Wednesday's victory moves the Mount to 9-3 overall and 7-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a showdown against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off with the Bears in Brooklyn is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
