Men’s Basketball Opens Three-Game Week With St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Knights continue South Division stretch

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team continues a busy interdivision stretch when it takes on three more Skyline Conference South Division rivals this week. The busy week begins with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday and continues with a home date against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday and a trip to St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday. Both midweek home games are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. with the road tilt in Patchogue, N.Y.) set for 3:00 p.m.
 
At A Glance: The Mount is in the midst of a four game slide which includes a 71-46 road loss at Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon that dropped it to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in league play. The Knights will search for its first victory since a conference win over USMMA on January 14 when they welcome the Bears to the Kaplan Center Tuesday night.
 
Senior Kendall Francis (Great Neck, N.Y.) has been the Mount's most consistent point producer through the season's first 16 games and enters the week averaging 18.4 points per game. Francis ranks sixth in the conference in scoring average and paces the Mount with 4.3 assists per game which is good for fifth in the conference. Francis has knocked down a team-high 41 three-point field goals to date and is shooting just shy of 37-percent from bonus distance.
 
Ethan Fox (Wallingford, Conn.) leads the Knights on the glass with 6.3 rebounds per game and is the team's top rim protector with 1.3 blocks per game. Fox chips in 8.7 points per game for the Mount and is shooting an efficient 52.5-percent from the floor in 101 attempts
 
Junior Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) is shooting 52-percent from the floor for the Mount and averages 8.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Senior Tristan Millett (Allentown, N.J.) paces the team with 2.3 steals per contest, adding 2.5 assists and 3.5 points per contest.
 
Mount Saint Mary begins the week averaging 63.6 points per game, which ranks 11th in the conference, but sits fourth in the league in scoring defense, allowing fewer than 71 points per tilt. The Knights are shooting 40.2-percent from the floor overall, 28.2-percent from three-point range and 64.8-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Last Time Out: The Mount suffered its fourth straight loss on Saturday when it fell on the road at Old Westbury by a score of 71-46. Sienke was the lone Knight in double-figures with 12 points with Nick Lucas (Sparta, N.J.) chipping in nine. Fox led all players in the game with nine rebound for the Knights.
 
Mount Saint Mary was held to 26.4-percent shooting in the game and just a 2-for-22 effort from three-point range. Old Westbury, who was led by 20 points from Pedro Marquez, shot an even 50-percent for the game and knocked in eight three-point field goals.
 
A Look At The Bears: St. Joseph's-Brooklyn comes to town with a 6-10 overall record and a 2-5 mark against league rivals following a 69-58 loss to Manhattanville on Saturday. The Bears have dropped three straight and sit in a tie for fourth place in the Skyline's South Division.
 
Stephane Etheart is averaging a double-double for the Bears, leading the team with 15.9 points and 10.1 rebounds to go along with a team-high 2.4 steals per outing. Etheart is tied for second in the conference in rebounding and fourth in the league in steals.
 
Frank Reali is the only other Bear averaging in double-figures with 11.0 points per game, with Kevan Meiner leading the team with 1.1 blocks per game to go along with 5.9 rebounds and 7.7 points per outing. Sebastian Etheart is the team's top distributor with 4.0 assists per game, good for sixth in the league, and chips in 5.7 points per night.
 
St. Joseph's ranks 10th in the Skyline Conference with 66.7 points per game as a team and enters the week shooting 36.6-percent from the floor, 26.9-percent from three-point range and 64.9-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Recent History: Since the start of the 2015-16 season, the Knights have won five of the seven meetings between the two teams. The Mount split last season's home-and-home with the Bears, falling in overtime on the road before rebounding for a convincing 88-68 win at the Kaplan Center on January 26, 2019.
 
Scouting Mount Saint Vincent: The Dolphins enter a Tuesday matchup with Maritime at 5-11 overall and with a 2-5 mark in conference play following a heartbreaking last second loss to Purchase on Saturday afternoon.
 
Raquis Harris leads the Dolphins' scoring attack with 17.5 points per game while shooting 43-percent from the floor and also sits atop the team leaderboard with 3.1 assists, 3.1 steals and 24 three-point field goals. Harris ranks eighth in the conference in scoring and second in the league in steals.
 
Kalos Evans is good for 14.7 points per game for the Dolphins with a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game, while Mamadou Mariko chips in 7.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and a team-high 1.7 blocks per game. Vinny Tavella is one of three players with at least 20 three-pointers on the season, shooting 43.5-percent from behind the arc.
 
Mount Saint Vincent is eighth in the league in scoring with just under 71 points per game and is shooting 42.1-percent from the field, 31.7-percent from three-point range and 64.6-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Recent History: Since the start of the 2006-07 season, the Knights and Dolphins have squared off 25 times with Mount Saint Mary holding a 14-11 record. The Knights stopped a seven game losing streak in the series with a pair of wins last year; winning on the road 59-55 on December 14, 2018 and posting a 71-63 win at the Kaplan Center on January 19, 2019.
 
Gauging The Golden Eagles: St. Joseph's-L.I. also closes out a three-game week on Saturday after taking on Manhattanville and Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday and Thursday. The Golden Eagles begin the week at 5-10 overall on the season and winless in seven outings in league play.
 
Frank Basile leads the team and is the league's leader in scoring with 24.5 points per night and is in the middle of a strong all-around season that sees him sit atop the team leaderboard with 9.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per contest.
 
Doug Niblock is the only other player averaging in double-figures with 13.6 points per game, chipping in 4.1 rebounds and a team-high 5.1 assists per game. Niblock is third in the conference in helpers and one of three players in the league averaging better than five assists per game.
 
Michael Darby checks in with 9.7 points per game for the Golden Eagles, while Jonah Caldwell is good for 6.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game for St. Joseph's.
 
St. Joseph's-L.I. is sixth in the conference in scoring with 71.8 points per game and is shooting 42.2-percent from the floor, 33.3-percent from behind the arc and 69.0-percent from the charity stripe.
 
Recent History: The two teams have split the last 26 meetings down the middle with 13 wins apiece. St. Joseph's won eight straight from the 2006-07 season through the 2009-10 campaign and the Knights are on a current seven game run that started with a 77-59 road win on January 16, 2016. The Mount's last loss to the Golden Eagles came in a 71-68 loss in Newburgh on January 25, 2015.
 
What's Next: The Knights welcome conference front runner #24 Yeshiva to the Kaplan Center on February 5 for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
