Newburgh, N.Y. – Coming off of two wins in three outings at Cazenovia last weekend, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team will head to New Paltz to take on Alfred, Hamilton, Williams and Kean starting on Friday evening. At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary opened the 2019 season on August 30 and topped Cazenovia to begin a season with a victory for the first time since 2014. The Knights won two of their three matches on opening weekend with
Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) earning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week honors, while senior
Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) became the program's all-time leader in total blocks with her 220
th.
Burke had a strong weekend for the Mount, putting away 25 kills and totaling 13 blocks. In the season opener against the Wildcats, She totaled 10 kills and three blocks and followed that up with seven winners and six blocks in a four set win over Alfred State. To close the week, Burke added four more blocks against Elmira and rounded out the weekend with eight kills.
In her first collegiate experience, Riddle finished the weekend with 35 kills, 42 digs and 12 service aces for the Mount. She had at least nine winners in each match, including a career-high 17 against Alfred State in a match she hit .438. Riddle lifted at least 10 digs in each of the team's three outings, totaling a career-high 17 against Elmira and had at least two aces in each match, totaling seven in the season opening win over Cazenovia.
Mount Saint Mary also got strong starts to the season from
Danielle Kralik (Bedford Hills, N.Y.),
Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) and
Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.). Kralik totaled 24 kills and 28 digs for the Mount, while Mazzurco averaged better than four assists per set and added 19 digs for the Knights. Barbara closed out the weekend with 58 digs, averaging better than five digs per set.
A Look At Alfred: The Saxons enter the weekend at an even 2-2 on the season after splitting four matches at the Bearcat Challenge hosted by Saint Vincent College. Alfred topped Allegheny and Waynesburg at the event, while losing to Saint Vincent and Westminster.
Amber Smith paces the Saxons with 76 kills through four matches and is putting together a strong all-around start to the season with seven aces, five blocks and 62 digs. Sarah Huzyk leads the team with 69 digs, with Rylee Russin pacing the team in aces with eight. Katie Geruso holds the team lead with 12 blocks, while Sarah Baty has handed out a team-best 86 assists.
Scouting Hamilton: The Continentals will open the season this weekend and are coming off a 2018 season that saw them go 8-13 overall and 1-9 in the NESCAC.
Previewing Williams: The Ephs will also see their first action of the 2019 season this weekend when they head to New Paltz. Williams is coming off a 2018 season that saw it go 12-12 overall and 5-5 in the NESCAC.
A Look At Kean: The Cougars have posted three wins in their first four matches of the 2019 season after winning three times at the Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont, Calif. Kean topped Wisconsin-Platteville, Occidental and Dallas at the event, with the lone blemish coming in straight sets against Pomona-Pitzer.
What's Next: Following a tough weekend event, the Mount will play the first of 10 matches on Tuesday when it plays host to FDU-Florham.
