Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team continues its challenging non-conference schedule this week when it travels to Montclair State for a 4:00 p.m. kick-off with the Red Hawks on Wednesday, before hosting Union on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Live Stats and Video will be available for both games for whose unable to attend.
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary enters the week at 1-3 overall and 1-0 in Skyline Conference play after besting Yeshiva 19-0 and falling a home to Ithaca 4-1. The scoring output against the Maccabees set new program records for goals in a game and points in a contest with 50.
Mount Saint Mary featured three players with a hat trick on Friday against the Macs, with
Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.),
KellyAnn Platt (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Lauren Engel (Red Hook, N.Y.) each potting a pair of goals. Engel closed out a seven-point day with an assist on her way to being named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week.
In all on Friday, the Knights had 12 different goal scorers and six players with at least one goal and one assist.
Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) closed the day with four helpers for the Knights, while
Haley Murphy (Massapequa, N.Y.) contributed a goal and a pair of assists to the winning effort.
A day later, the Mount battled with Ithaca and moved to within a goal at 2-1 in the final 10 minutes of regulation. After the Bombers potted a goal late in the first half and early on after halftime to open a two-goal advantage, Cannella scored in the 84
th minute to bring the Mount to within a single shot. Ithaca responded with a pair of goals in the final four minutes to pull away for the three goal win.
Following a productive week, Cannella holds the team lead in goals with five and points with 11. Engel and Platt have each scored three times for the Mount, while Bornstad holds the team lead in assists with four.
In goal, junior
Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) has played all 360 minutes to date and holds a 3.50 goals against average with a .517 save percentage. She has registered one shutout over the season's first four games and stopped 15 opponent attempts.
Scouting The Red Hawks: Montclair State holds a 1-2-1 overall record through four contests and is coming off a 1-0 win over Salisbury on September 7. Emily DeGeyter converted a penalty kick with 31 seconds left in regulation for the game's only goal, while Lindsay Freewalt made five saves to pick up the shutout.
DeGeyter and Emily Benders have scored the only two goals for Montclair State thus far in 2019 with Kylinn Kraemer and Gabby D'emlio leading the team with an assist apiece.
In goal, Freewalt and Phoebe Bledsoe have split the action over four games with each player making two starts. Freewalt has made 11 saves and holds a .733 save percentage to go along with a shutout, while Bledsoe has stopped nine shots and is sporting a .900 save percentage to go along with a shutout.
A Look At Union: Union comes to town on Saturday with a 2-2 overall record following a 1-0 win over Trinity (Conn.) in double overtime on September 7. Hanna Raymond scored her first goal of the season in the 106
th minute for the game winner, with Allison Sorkenn making seven saves to earn the shutout.
Through four games, six players are tied for the team lead with one goal apiece. Emma Schleimer and Bella Dworkin have each added an assist to their goal to lead the way in points with three apiece.
Sorkenn has seen the bulk of action in goal in the early going, playing 355:10 of a possible 375:46. She holds a 1.27 goals against average to go along with an .800 save percentage while making 20 saves.
What's Next: Following Saturday's tussle with Union, the Mount will be off until September 21 when it heads across the Hudson River to tangle with local foe Vassar. Kick-off in Poughkeepsie is slated for 11:00 a.m.
