Cazenovia, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team scored a victory in its season opener for the first time since 2014 with a 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15 road win at Cazenovia Friday night. The Mount was led by a 10-kill performance from senior
Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.).
Mount Saint Mary took advantage of 11 Wildcat miscues in the opening frame to post the four-point victory and opened a 2-0 lead with 14 kills in the second frame on Friday. After recording just five kills in dropping the third set, the Knights rebounded with 11 winners and hit a blistering .478 in the deciding fourth set to post its first season opening win since sweeping Curry on August 29, 2014 at the Oneonta Invitational.
Burke, who led the team in kills and was a First Team All-Skyline Conference selection in 2018, got her senior season off to a strong start with 10 kills while hitting .296 against the Wildcats. She rounded out a strong all-around match with an ace, three total blocks and a trio of digs for the Knights. Burke is now just seven blocks shy of matching the program record that has stood since the 2010 campaign.
Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) had a strong collegiate debut for the Mount, putting away nine kills to go along with 10 digs and a team-high seven service aces. Junior
Danielle Kralik (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) finished off the night with eight winners and 12 digs to go along with three aces.
Senior
Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) handed out a team-high 21 assists for the Mount and finished up the win with five kills and a trio of aces. Freshman
Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) posted 13 helpers and nine digs in her collegiate debut, while sophomore
Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) led the Mount with 14 digs.
Cazenovia was led by an 11-kill performance from Sarah Herman, while Grace Torino finished the night with a match-high 16 digs to go along with three service aces and four kills. Kaylin Van Auken led all players with 26 assists for the Wildcats and chipped in four digs.
Overall, Mount Saint Mary finished the match with a 39-34 edge in kills, a 14-11 advantage in service aces and a 4-1 edge in total team blocks.
At 1-0 on the season, Mount Saint Mary will close the weekend at Cazenovia on Saturday with matches against Alfred State at 12:00 p.m. and Elmira at 2:00 p.m.
