Softball Tops St. Joseph’s-L.I., Advances To Championship Round

Bennett drives in runs, posts win in circle for the Knights

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team won its third elimination game of the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 win over second seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. Junior Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) drove in a run and earned the win for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary got off to a 1-0 lead against the Golden Eagles in the home half of the fourth inning. After Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) walked and advanced to third on a stolen base and a groundout, Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) drove her in with a two-out single down the right field line.

The one-run lead held until the top of the seventh inning when the Golden Eagles plated their only run of the game. Elise Grau led off the frame with a walk and pinch runner Aryana Caputo made her way to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Caputo eventually came home with the tying run on a two-out single through the left side from Jenna DeFina.

With the game tied at 1-1, the Mount got a leadoff walk from MacKenzie Hymes (Middletown, Del.) before pinch runner Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) made her way to second on a groundout. With two  outs, Moustouka beat out a groundball to shortstop and McCann scored from second with the throw from first not in time at the plate.

Mount Saint Mary outhit St. Joseph's 5-3 in the contest with Bennett finishing the win 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) doubled for the Knights with Lang and McCann crossing with the Knights' runs.

Bennett moved to 7-7 on the season in the circle for the Knights with the complete game effort. She allowed only three singles in the contest, allowing one run, while walking five and fanning five. Katelynn Valente suffered the tough luck loss with 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

At 16-21-1 overall, Mount Saint Mary will take on top seeded Farmingdale State at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday in the first of two possible championship round contests.
