Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball had team its three-year run as league champion stopped on Saturday afternoon with a tight 3-2 loss to top seed Farmingdale State in the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship Final Round. Senior
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) finished her career with a 4-for-4 effort out of the leadoff spot for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary got off to a quick start in its second game on Saturday, plating its only two runs in the home half of the first inning. Almodovar led off the inning with a single and moved along to third following a sacrifice and back-to-back walks from
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) and
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.).
Following the walk to O'Neill that loaded the bases, junior
Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) singled to right field to bring home Almodovar and Bennet for the early 2-0 lead in the team's fourth elimination game of the championship.
The two-run lead stood up until the top of the third even Farmingdale State evened things at 2-2. The Rams took advantage of two hits and a pair of errors to square the score in their third at-bat. Jessica Clark started the rally with a double and advanced to third on a one-out single from Jessica Lombardo. Amaris Negron reached on an error that plated Clark with Lombardo coming home on a misplayed pop up to knot the score.
Farmingdale State took advantage of the Mount's third miscue of the day in the top of the fourth to plate what proved to be the deciding run. After Aleysha Midgett singled to start the inning, she scored from first on a failed pickoff throw.
Trailing by a run, Mount Saint Mary put two runners in scoring position over its final four at-bats, including Almodovar reaching second with two outs in the seventh, but could not punch home the tying run.
Mount Saint Mary outhit Farmingdale State 7-6 in the game, with Almodovar finishing 4-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
MacKenzie Hymes (Middletown, Del.), Oury and
Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) all finished 1-for-3 with Bennet scoring a run for the Knights.
Lombardo went 2-for-4 with a run for the Rams with Clark and Midgett each recording a hit and scoring a run.
O'Neill made the start in the circle and worked the first 2.1 innings for the Mount, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits and three walks. Hymes suffered the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run on four hits in 4.2 innings. Maddy Smith picked up the win for Farmingdale State, allowing two runs on seven hits, as she moved to 9-5 on the season.
Saturday's loss to Farmingdale State ends the Mount's season at 16-22-1.
