Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team extended its season on Friday evening with an 11-1 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent in an elimination game of the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship. Sophomore
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) worked a complete game in the circle and drove in three runs for the Knights.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, the Mount evened the score in the home half of the inning and then erupted for six tallies in the third and four more runs in the fourth.
Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) picked up an RBI to even the score at 1-1 in the second when
Jayda Cavanaugh (Wolcott, Conn.) came home on a fielding error.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Mount strung together five hits in the third frame and took advantage of an error to open a 7-1 advantage. The first five hitters of the inning reached with O'Neill driving a three-run double to center field that delivered
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.),
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) and
Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) with the deciding runs.
Victoria Santamauro (Eastchester, N.Y.) added a run scoring single in the inning with
Jillian Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) delivering
Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly. Almodovar finished off the scoring in the inning with a run scoring single through the middle that brought Hernandez home with the inning's sixth tally.
Mount Saint Mary recorded four more hits in the home half of the fourth frame to spread its lead to the final 10-run advantage. O'Neill and Lang led off the inning with back-to-back doubles with
Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) driving in Lang with a bunt single.
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) crossed with the game's final run on the Dolphins' third error of the contest.
The Knights outhit the Dolphins 10-5 in the game and featured seven different players with a hit. O'Neill finished 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI with Lang going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Almodovar finished the win 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Bennett, McCann and Moustouka al recorded a hit and a run scored.
O'Neill finished off a strong all-around night with a complete game that moved her to 6-4 on the season and tied her for the team lead in wins. She allowed a run on five hits and struck out three. Kayla Pagano took the loss after surrendering four earned runs in 2.0 innings.
At 15-21-1, Mount Saint Mary will take on the loser of the Farmingdale State and St. Joseph's-L.I. winner's bracket game at 12:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
