Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team closed a four match week at 3-1 following a convincing 8-1 non-conference win over Rutgers-Newark on Senior Day. The Mount's four seniors;
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.),
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.),
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Connor Bacci (Bayside, N.Y.) all played a role in the win for the Mount.
The Mount opened up a 3-0 lead following doubles competition on Sunday with McGorty and
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) cruising to an 8-4 win on their way to improving to 6-2 on the season. Terry and
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) picked up an 8-5 win at the second position, moving to 4-2 on the season, with Bacci and Ryan scoring an 8-5 win at the third position in their first action of the season together.
For the second straight day, the Mount posted wins in the top five singles positions. McGorty battled to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win at the first position, scoring his second straight win while evening his record on the season at 4-4.
Terry cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 at the second flight, with Ryan posting a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the fifth position. Terry improved his singles record to 5-3 on Sunday, while Ryan won for the second straight time and evened his record at 4-4.
Tiriolo continued his standout sophomore season and moved to 8-0 on the year with a 6-1, 6-2 third singles win, with Gallo posting a 6-1, 6-4 fourth position win on his way to improving to 4-2 in singles play on the season.
Sunday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 6-2 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is the second match of a six match home stand on Wednesday. The Knights welcome league rival Sarah Lawrence to Newburgh for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
