Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team picked up its first conference win of the season on Saturday with an impressive 7-2 road win at St. Joseph's-L.I. The Mount won two of the three doubles contests and took five of the six singles matches in the victory.
The Knights got off to a strong start and opened a 2-1 lead with wins at the first and second doubles position. The top pair of
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) moved to 5-2 on the season with an 8-1 victory, while the second pair of
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) and
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) improved to 3-2 with an 8-4 victory against the Golden Eagles.
In singles action, the Mount took the top five positions to secure the road win. McGorty picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top spot and improved to 3-4 overall on the season, while Terry outlasted his opponent at the second position 4-6, 6-1, 15-13 to move to 4-3 on the season.
Tiriolo improved to a perfect 7-0 at the third slot for the Knights after cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory with Gallo easing to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth single to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) collected his third win of the season at the fifth position, posting a 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 victory for the Knights.
Saturday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 5-2 overall on the season and to 1-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights return home on Sunday for a non-conference match with Rutgers-Newark scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
