Women’s Lacrosse Drops Skyline Opener Against Old Westbury

Shalvey picks up five points in the loss

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team dropped its Skyline Conference opener on Wednesday evening 17-13 against Old Westbury. Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) had a career high five points, including three goals and two assists, for the Knights.

The Knights got on the board with the first two goals as Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Anne Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) found the back of the net early. Old Westbury responded with five straight goals as Hope Matthews and Yaritza Caraballo combined for all five goals.

Nicole Cervone (Shirley, N.Y.) stopped the five goal run at the 18:33 mark but Jessica Pedroza quickly countered with a goal for the Panthers. After a Monique Joseph extended the lead to three, the Knights scored back to back goals to cut the lead to one.

Old Westbury then scored two goals in 26 seconds to push the lead back to three. Mount Saint Mary ended the half with two goals by Providence Gilkey (Shirley, N.Y.) and Shalvey to cut the lead to 9-8.

The Panthers held a slim shots advantage of 13-11 and held an advantage in draw controls of 15-3 at the intermission. The Mount picked up 10 groundballs compared to Old Westbury's six after one half.

The Knights scored the first goal out of the intermission as Condron found the back of the net to bring the game back to a tie for the first time since 24:09 mark of the first half. Old Westbury countered with five straight goals, including four from Natasha Treuman.

The Panthers lead was pushed to six on a goal by Lauren Allen before Shalvey scored the last two goals of the contest in the last two minutes.
Condron finished with three goals to push her team lead to 14 while Shalvey now leads in assists with three. Cervone, Gilkey and Dolan each had two goals on the contest and Alyssa DiMare (Staten Island, N.Y.) added a goal.

DiMare held the lead in groundballs with four while Meghan Cumming (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) had three caused turnovers. Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Knights in draw controls with three.

Treuman scored a game-high six goals on the contest while Matthews added four goals. Treuman also had four groundballs, eight draw controls and two caused turnovers. Matthews also had eight draw controls for the Panthers.

Grace Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) took the loss in goal as she made six saves for Mount Saint Mary. Tazmeya Allen earned the win for Old Westbury as she made eight stops.

Old Westbury finished the game with a shots advantage of 31-26 and dominated in draw controls at 23-9. Mount Saint Mary held the edge in groundballs at 21-14.

At 0-7 on the season, Mount Saint Mary travels to Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon. First draw with the Rams is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
