Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team closed out the 2019 season on Sunday with a 17-6 home loss to conference regular season champion Maritime. Junior
Ryan Maraio (State Island, N.Y.) scored twice with senior
Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore
Danny Marshall (Oceanside, N.Y.) caused a trio of turnovers.
After a back-and-forth start to the game that saw the Knights hold a trio of one-goal leads, Maritime used a five goal run to end the first period and open the second stanza to surge in front for good in the game.
Mount Saint Mary answered with goals from
Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) to pull to within 7-5 with 5:52 left before halftime, but goals from Brett Trodden and Collin Flannery in the final 4:39 of the half sent the visitors to the intermission with a 9-5 advantage.
Maritime finished the opening 30 minutes with a 22-16 advantage in shots and controlled first half face-offs 11-5, leading to a 23-19 edge in groundballs.
The Mount was limited to just one second half goal on Sunday, with Maritime outscoring the Knights 8-1 after the intermission. Maraio tallied his second goal of the game to stop a 3-0 run in the third period off a feed from
Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) at the 7:47 mark of the period.
Maraio rounds out the season second on the team in goals with 22 and as the team leader in assists with 20 and points with 42. Martin finished off the day with a goal and an assist for the Knights.
Beidl and Marshall led the team's defensive effort with three caused turnovers apiece, with Beidl adding four groundballs.
James Farrell (East Brunswick, N.J.) finished off a solid day with two caused miscues and a pair of groundballs. Spagnuolo won seven of his 15 face-offs on the day and collected three groundballs for the Knights.
Maritime was led by five goals and seven points from Mike Leake with Matt DeMeo adding two goals and three assists and Trodden tallying twice and helping on two other goals. Mark Buchner caused three turnovers and picked up seven groundballs for the Privateers, while Kevin Buser won 17 face-offs and secured five groundballs.
Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) suffered the loss in goal for the Knights, finishing the day with nine stops to go along with four groundballs. Justin Weigold picked up the win with four stops in 45 minutes of action.
Maritime finished the victory with the advantage in shots 43-28, shots on goal 26-15, face-offs 17-10 and groundballs 44-32. The Knights went 18-for-23 in clearing chances and 0-1 with the man advantage.
Sunday's loss finishes the season for the Knights at 5-11 overall and 2-4 in Skyline Conference play.
