Kings Point, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary Women's Lacrosse team returned to action on Tuesday night as the Knights dropped a 19-3 contest against unbeaten United States Merchant Marine Academy. Freshman
Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored two goals in the defeat.
The Mariners got off to a strong start as they scored the first six goals of the game. Meredith Williard and Jessie Wohner each scored two of the six goals scored in the first eight minutes of action.Â
Shalvey scored the first goal of the game for the Knights on an assist from
Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) at the 17:32 mark. Goals from Maura Malone and Maddie Schmidt pushed the Mariners lead to seven with 16:22 remaining in the first half.
Condron found the back of the net for the second Mount goal of the night at the 14:28 mark before the Mariners scored five straight goals to take a 13-2 lead into the halftime intermission.
Merchant Marine held a 24-4 shots advantage in the first half and 22-3 in shots on goal. The Mariners held the edge in groundballs at 18-7 and a 10-6 advantage in draw controls.
Shalvey scored her second goal of the evening with 21:44 remaining in the second half on a pass from
Hope Blanc (Wantagh, N.Y.) for the Mount's final goal of the contest. USMMA scored the final four goals of the contest.
The Mariners held a 10-4 shots advantage after halftime and led 8-4 in shots on goal. Merchant Marine also held a groundballs edge at 12-8 and had a 6-2 advantage in draw controls after the break.
Shalvey and Condron each finished with two points in the game and Blanc picked up a point with her assist. Condron and
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) each picked up three groundballs while five different players had a caused turnover.
Meghan Cumming (Massapequa, Park, N.Y.) led the Knights in draw controls with three.
Williard finished with five goals, an assist and three groundballs while Schmidt had four goals and five groundballs. Jessica Reilly finished with two goals, nine groundballs, three caused turnovers and six draw controls with Malone also adding two goals and six draw controls.
Finkel took the loss in goal as she made 11 saves for the Knights. Hannah Gizzi earned the win for Merchant Marine, making three saves.
USMMA held a 34-8 advantage in shots in the game while holding a 30-7 edge in shots on goal. Merchant Marine also held the edge in groundballs at 30-15 and 16-8 in draw controls.
At 1-12 overall and 1-5 in the Skyline Conference, the Mount plays its regular season finale against Maritime on Saturday afternoon. First draw with the Privateers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
