Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team closed out the 2019 season with a 15-8 road loss at league rival Maritime on Saturday. Junior Country Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and freshman
Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) each finished the day with three points for the Knights.
Maritime got off to a quick start on Saturday, netting the first three goals of the contest over the opening 1:19 of play. The Knights got on the board with a
Nicole Cervone (Shirley, N.Y.) tally at the 27:53 mark of the opening stanza.
Following the Cervone tally, Maritime ran off the next four goals to open a 7-1 lead with 15:25 remaining before halftime.
Alyssa DiMare (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Condron followed with the next two goals to get the Knights to within 7-3, but a Sara Wright marker with 12:40 remaining in the half sent the Privateers into the intermission with a five goal advantage.
Maritime finished the opening 20 minutes with 20-7 advantage in shots that included a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. The Privateers controlled groundballs prior to halftime and held the edge in draw controls 9-3.
The Knights opened the scoring in the second half on an
Anne Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tally to get to within 8-4, but the Mount would not be able to climb closer than four goals the rest of the way. Maritime used a four goal run to stretch its lead to 12-8 and it did not allow the Mount to score consecutive goals after halftime until
Providence Gilkey (Shirley, N.Y.) and Shalvey tallied in the final 8:56 to bring the Knights to the final seven goal deficit.
Shalvey finished the day with a pair of goals and an assist to give her 15 goals and 23 points on the season. Condron pushed her team lead in goals to 26 and added two assists to finish the season with 30 points.
Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Knights with three draw controls and added a goal, while
Hope Blanc (Wantagh, N.Y.) caused three turnovers and led the Mount with four groundballs. Cervone added two caused miscues and a pair of groundballs to her tally on Saturday.
Maritime was led by seven goals from Catherine Pfundstein who closed a strong all-around day with seven groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Wright won 14 draws for the Privateers with Courtney Salatto causing five turnovers.
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) finished with a career-high 20 saves in just shy of 50 minutes of work, with
Grace Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) making a pair of stops in just over 10 minutes of work. Esmeralda Hernandez picked up the win for Maritime with a trio of stops.
Maritime finished the day with the advantage in shots 44-16, shots on goal 37-11, draw controls 17-8 and groundballs 37-16. The Mount went 13-for-23 in clearing chances in the game with Maritime posting a 13-for-18 effort.
Saturday's loss drops the Mount to 1-12 overall on the season and to 1-6 in Skyline Conference play.
