Baseball Travels To Non-Conference Foes NJCU, Oneonta

Knights look to rebound off weekend sweep

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team hits the road once again as they travel to New Jersey City University on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch and then travel north to take on SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

At A Glance: The Knights were swept on Saturday afternoon in 3-1 and 8-1 losses to the United States Merchant Marine Academy to fall to 8-7 (2-4 Skyline).

Three players are hitting above .380 on the season as Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) is hitting .447 on the season with 17 hits and a team best .488 on base percentage.  

John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) is hitting an even .400 on the season and holds a team high 18 hits while Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) is third in average at .381 while being second in on-base percentage at .480 and he is 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) is the leader in runs batted in with 10 so far this season.

Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) leads in innings pitched with 22.2 while holding a 6.35 earned run average while Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) holds the team lead in innings pitched with 19.0 while holding a team best 1.89 ERA. Santana has logged 15.0 innings and boasts a 4.20 ERA in addition to Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) tossing 14 and two-thirds while having a 4.91 earned run average.

The Knights hold a .922 fielding percentage and a 3.91 team ERA. The Mount holds a team batting average of .260 batting average this season and holds a .262 batting average against. As a team, the Knights are 39-44 in stolen base attempts.

Last Time Out: The Mount was swept in a Skyline doubleheader against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium. The Knights dropped a tight 3-1 contest in game one and then lost 8-1 in the nightcap. N. Rizzo finished with three hits in the two games.

Spano took the tough loss in game one as he finished with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits. Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) added 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Mount. N. Rizzo finished 2-for-4 on the day while A. Rizzo was 2-for-2 with the lone RBI for the Knights.

In the nightcap, Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) got his first start of his Mount career as he took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and struck out four. Six different players had a hit in the contest for the Mount.

A Look At NJCU: The Gothic Knights are 9-5 (1-1 NJAC) after splitting a conference doubleheader with Stockton on Saturday.

Juan Pena is the leading hitter for NCJU at a .431 clip while leading the team in runs batted in with 15. He also leads the team in stolen bases with 17. Tom Pucline is hitting .395 on the season and leads the team in on base percentage at .565. Matt Corsi is second on team in RBI with 14.

Fernando Gutierrez is the leader in innings pitched with 20.0 and boasts a 1.80 earned run average with a 2-1 record. Gavin Niland has thrown 17.1 innings and holds a 3.63 ERA with a 3-0 record. John Pudder has two saves for the Gothic Knights while Jason Rivera has a save and a 0.96 ERA.

Defensively, NJCU holds a .939 fielding percentage while the pitching staff holds a .264 batting average against in addition to a 4.72 team ERA. Offensively, the Gothic Knights have a .297 team batting average and are 52-66 on stolen base attempts.

Studying Oneonta: The Red Dragons are 9-12 (2-7 SUNYAC) after being swept in a three game series against SUNY Cortland over the weekend.

John Zinko leads Oneonta with a .408 batting average, a .500 on base percentage and 14 RBI. He also has two homeruns on the season. Jonathan Lezette is second in RBI with 12 and has three triples. Mickey Mullins is 20-23 in stolen base attempts for the Red Dragons.

Robert Ottaviano leads in innings pitched with 27.1 and boasts a 3.29 earned run average. Steven Gerringer is second in innings with 26.0 and holds a team-best 2.08 ERA.

Defensively, the Red Dragons hold a .934 fielding percentage and have allowed 34 stolen bases while the pitching staff carries a 5.68 ERA and a .278 batting average against into Wednesday's contest. Offensively, Oneonta holds a .238 batting average and are 46-53 in stolen base attempts

What's Next: Mount Saint Mary continues its road swing with Skyline Conference doubleheaders against Farmingdale State and Yeshiva this weekend. The doubleheader with the Rams is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday while the twinbill with the Maccabees is also scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start on Sunday.
