Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team picked up its second straight conference victory on Saturday with an impressive 18-4 win over visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent on Senior Day. Fourteen different Knights recorded a point in the win, led by five from junior
Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.).
The Mount got off to a fast start on Saturday and never looked back. Holland scored just eight seconds into the game to set the tone as the Knights went on to hold an 8-0 lead after 15 minutes of action. Holland finished the first period on Saturday with two goals and a pair of assists.
Mount Saint Vincent would get on the board early in the second stanza to break the Mount's 8-0 run, but tallies from
Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.),
Brandon Holloway (Garden City, N.Y.) and
Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) in the final 8:32 of the period set the Mount to the intermission with a commanding 11-1 advantage.
Mount Saint Mary finished the opening 30 minutes with a 27-10 advantage in shots and dominated face-offs 12-2, leading to a 25-11 first half advantage in groundballs.
Coming out of halftime, the Mount picked right up where it left off with four of the six goals scored in the third period and three of the four tallies in the final stanza.
Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and
Michael Darcy (Islip, N.Y.) each scored two goals after the intermission on Saturday.
In all, Mount Saint Mary had 10 different players score a goal and four players finish with a goal and an assist. Holland was one of three players to score three goals in the game, adding two assists, with Esposito and Darcy also scoring three times for the Knights.
Michael Gallucci (Northport, N.Y.) finished a productive day with a trio of assists for the Mount.
In addition to his two goals, Maggio contributed five groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Knights with
Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finishing up with a pair of groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Dennis Dowd (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) finished off a career-day after going 21-for-26 in face-offs to go along with nine groundballs.
Patrick Nagy led the Dolphins with two goals, with Nick DiStefano picking up six groundballs and causing two turnovers. Anthony Pedatella won four face-offs for the Dolphins and picked up three groundballs.
In goal, junior
Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) earned the win with two saves in 30 minutes of work.
Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) came on in the second half for the Knights and stopped three Mount Saint Vincent shots. Christian Brody made 17 saves and secured two groundballs for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Mary finished the day with a convincing advantage in each team category, outshooting the visitors 52-21 overall and 35-9 in shots on goal. Groundballs went to the Knights 49-24 and Mount Saint Mary dominated face-offs 21-5.
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 5-8 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Mount is a trip to St. Joseph's-L.I. on Thursday. Face-off with the Golden Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m.
