Knights Rally For Sweep At Purchase

Bennett wins both games, drives in three runs

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team continued its winning ways within the Skyline Conference on Friday with a 6-0 and 4-2 sweep on the road at Purchase. Junior Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) won both games in the circle and drove in three runs for the Mount on the day.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 6 – Purchase 0
Bennett spun her third shutout and worked her fifth complete game in nine appearances in game one on Friday. She allowed just one single in the game, walked five and struck out five. She moved to 3-3 on the season with the win and fanned at least five batters in a game for the third time on the season.

Mount Saint Mary got all the scoring it would need with a single run in the second and tacked on one run in the third, two more in the fifth and then single runs in the sixth and seven frames. Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) drove in the eventual deciding run with a two-out single that delivered Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) in the second.

The Mount doubled its lead in the third when Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch and then opened a four-run lead on a two-out, two-run single down the right field line off the bat of Jillian Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) that drove home Bennett and Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.).

The Knights closed out the scoring with single runs in their final two at-bats, with Bennett delivering McCann with a single in the sixth and Picarillo scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Mount Saint Mary outhit Purchase 10-1 in the opener with eight different players recording a hit and a trio of players posting two safeties. Bennett finished up 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI with McCann also adding a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and one driven in. Picarillo rounded out the trio with two hits, going 2-for-2 with a run and two driven in, adding one of the team's seven stolen bases.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 4 – Purchase 2
Purchase jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning of game two and gained a lead that held until the Mount knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Purchase recorded three hits in its first at-bat of the game, including a run scoring infield single from Kelly Hayes. The Panthers added their second run when Kaitlyn Almonte was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Trailing by two runs, the Mount strung together four hits to pull even in the game. Bennett got the Knights on the board with a run scoring double in the fifth and later scored the equalizing run when Oury doubled to left with two outs in the frame.

Mount Saint Mary grabbed its first lead of the game in the sixth when Bennett drove home Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly and added an insurance run in the seventh when Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) scampered home on a wild pitch.

The Mount was outhit in game two 8-7 with seven different players producing a hit. Bennett and Hernandez each finished with a hit and a run scored with Bennett, Oury and Lang each ripping a double. Bennett finished with a pair of RBI and Oury drove in her seventh run of the season.
