Men’s Lacrosse Set To Host Purchase, College Of Mount Saint Vincent

Knights look to score first conference win of the season

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team will play two of its final three home games of the season this week when it welcomes Purchase and the College of Mount Saint Vincent to Newburgh. The midweek tilt with the Panthers is set for 7:00 p.m., with the Knights and Dolphins squaring off at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
 
At A Glance: The Knights enter Wednesday's contest having dropped its last four contests, including an 11-6 road loss at Farmingdale State on Saturday. The Mount has not won a game since topping Manhattanville 10-9 in double overtime on March 20.
 
Mount Saint Mary features a trio of players with at least 10 goals on the season, led by 17 markers from junior Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) who is second on the team with 22 points. Classmate Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) has potted 13 goals and paces the Knights with 15 assists and 28 points.
 
Sophomore Thomas Bahmer III (East Brunswick, N.J.) chips in with 10 goals and 11 points, while Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) is contributing 15 points on the strength of seven goals and eight assists.
 
Sophomore Matthew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) leads four players with at least 10 caused turnovers with 31 on the year and is also tops on the team with 42 groundballs. Senior Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) helps to anchor the defense with 13 caused turnovers and 27 groundballs, while Vinny Vaccaro (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) have each caused 10 miscues.
 
Junior Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) has taken 181 of the team's 242 face-offs this far and has won 84 for a percentage of .464. Spagnuolo has also collected 32 groundballs, the second highest total on the team. Freshman Dennis Dowd (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) has won 20 face-offs for the Mount and scooped a pair of groundballs.
 
Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) has started each of the Mount's 11 games in goal thus far and holds a .464 save percentage and a 13.01 goals against average while making 110 saves. Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) has seen time in five contests and made 13 stops for the Knights.
 
Among the Skyline Conference leaders, Maraio ranks seventh in assists per game, while Martino paces the conference in caused turnovers per game. Laikin sits fifth in the conference in saves per contest heading into Wednesday's contest.
 
Last Time Out: The Mount dropped its Skyline Conference opener on the road at Farmingdale State on Saturday by a score of 11-6.
 
Maraio scored twice and assisted on a goal for the Knights to move his team lead in assists to 15 and his team mark in points to 28. Holland scored his team leading 17th goal of the season and joined Bahmer with a goal and an assist in the contest.
 
Martino continued his steady play on defensive with five caused turnovers and four groundballs, while Jake Camerino (Shelton, Conn.) paced the Mount with his nine groundballs. Spagnuolo picked up three groundballs for the Mount and went 13-for-20 in face-offs on the day.
 
Laikin took the loss in goal for the Mount, finishing with eight saves.
 
Senior Day: Prior to Saturday's contest, the Mount will recognize the two members of this year's senior class. Beidl and Anthony Benavidez (White Plains, N.Y.) will be recognized for their contributions to the program over the course of their careers prior to face-off with Mount Saint Vincent.
 
Previewing Purchase: The Panthers come calling on Wednesday sporting a 5-3 overall record and a 0-1 mark in league play following a 15-7 loss at Maritime on April 2. Dylan Gethicker, Dan Ohrem and Zach Zarrella each scored two goals in the game for Purchase.
 
Ohrem leads the Purchase scoring attack through eight games with 30 goals and 35 points, while Ben Erkan contributes 17 goals and 23 points. Gethicker rounds out a trio in double-figures in goals with 11 tallies, adding a team-high eight assists for 19 points.
 
Joseph Ely leads four players with at least 10 caused turnovers with a team-high 15 and also leads the way with 60 groundballs and 77 face-off wins, winning 55.4-percent of his draws.
 
Matt Sayegh has started each of the Panthers eight games in goal and holds a 9.69 goals against average and a .551 save percentage while stopping 92 opponent shots.
 
Ohrem finds himself second in the conference in goals per game to start the week with Gethicker third in the league in assists per contest and fourth in points per outing. Sayegh sits second among the league leaders in saves per game.
 
Recent History: Wednesday's matchup will be just the third between the two programs, with the Mount coming away victorious in each of the prior two meetings. The Knights posted a 23-8 home win on April 12, 2017 before scoring a 19-4 road win on March 29, 2018.
 
Scouting Mount Saint Vincent: The Dolphins enter a Wednesday afternoon conference tilt with St. Joseph's-L.I. at 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play and are coming off a 20-3 loss against Maritime on Saturday. Matthew Pincus, Patrick Nagy and Jarrett McLean posted the goals for the Dolphins.
 
Nagy is one of two players with at least 10 goals on the season for the Dolphins, leading the way with 34 markers and 37 points. Pincus paces the team with nine assists and has added 10 goals through 10 games for 19 points on the season.
 
Nick DiStefano has caused a team-high 16 turnovers for the Dolphins and adds 36 groundballs, while Jaiden Martinez leads the team with 48 groundballs. Anthony Pedatella has won 59 face-offs for the Dolphins and picked up 27 groundballs.
 
Christian Brody has manned the cage for the Dolphins, starting each of the team's 10 games. He has posted a .572 save percentage to date and holds a 15.41 goals against average while making 207 saves.
 
Nagy enters the week third in the conference in goals per game and seventh in points per game with Brody pacing the league with 20.7 saves per game.
 
Recent History: The Knights and Dolphins will meet for the 10th time on Saturday, with Mount Saint Mary holding a 7-2 record in the series. After Mount Saint Vincent won the first two meetings, the Knights have ripped off seven straight wins, including a 22-5 road win on April 14, 2018.
 
What's Next: Following Saturday's home contest the Mount will round out the regular season with road games at St. Joseph's-L.I. (April 18), and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (April 24) and a home contest in the regular season finale against Maritime (April 28).
