Baseball Ready For Non-Conference Tilt Against Manhattanville

Knights look to get back to the .500 mark

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team begins a five game homestand on Wednesday as the Knights play host to non-conference foe Manhattanville. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium.

At A Glance: The Knights returned to the win column on Sunday as they swept Yeshiva, 17-0 (seven innings) and 11-4, in a Skyline doubleheader to improve to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in the Skyline.

John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) leads the Knights at the plate as he is hitting .385 on the season and holds the team lead in runs batted in with 11. Santana also holds the on-base percentage lead at .458. Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) is hitting .382 for the Mount while being second in hits with 21.

Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) has a team-high 22 hits as well as a team-high 14 runs scored. He is also 13-for-14 in stolen base attempts. Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) is hitting .440 in 25 at-bats while Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) holds a .421 batting average in 19 at-bats.

Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) leads in innings pitched with 27.2 while holding a 5.20 earned run average while Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) is second in innings pitched with 25.0 while holding a 2.88 ERA. Nick Zestanakis (Bayside, N.Y.) has logged 10.0 innings out of the bullpen and holds a 1.80 ERA while DiGiovanni has tossed 10.1 innings with a 2.61 earned run average.

The Knights hold a .928 fielding percentage and a 3.91 team ERA. The Mount holds a team batting average of .267 batting average this season and holds a .255 batting average against. As a team, the Knights are 53-61 in stolen base attempts.

Last Time Out: The Mount finished off the weekend with a sweep of Yeshiva on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Knights scored 26 runs over the two games of the doubleheader as the Mount won game one 17-0 in seven innings while winning the nightcap 11-4.

In game one, Spano picked up the win for the Knights, throwing five innings and allowing zero runs on four hits. Robert Worden (Grahamsville, N.Y.) and Andrew Connors (New Windsor, N.Y.) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief and struck out two apiece.

Justin Maldonado (Cold Spring, N.Y.) finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) and N. Rizzo each had two RBI. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished with three runs scored for the Knights.

In the nightcap, the Knights took an 11-4 victory over the Maccabees as DiGiovanni earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and struck out five. Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y) started for the Knights and took a no-decision.

Ryan Lutinski (Easton, Conn.), Mirra and Tait each finished with two hits while Lutinski had three RBI. Jasper Bradley (Hampton Bays, N.Y.), N. Rizzo and Tait each had two runs scored with the Knights stealing eight bases in the contest.

A Look At Manhattanville: The Valiants hold a 13-10 (8-3 MACF) record after defeating Maritime 16-0 in a non-conference matchup yesterday.

Manhattanville has nine players with a .300 batting average or higher as Peter Iannarilli leads the Valiants in average at .494 with five home runs and 39 runs batted in. He also leads the team in doubles with 12. Matt Lynch carries a .404 batting average into today's contest and Jack Matero is hitting .403 at this point of the season.

Justin Proteau leads Manhattanville in innings pitched with 24.0 with a 4-1 record on the season and has an ERA of 4.13. Alby Ciuffetelli has tossed 23.1 innings and holds a 5.40 earned run average in five appearances. Rami Masani holds a 1.80 ERA in 10 appearances out of the bullpen.

The Valiants has a .959 fielding percentage while the pitching staff has a 6.33 team earned run average. Manhattanville's pitching has a .312 batting average against while offensively, they are hitting .349 as a team.

What's Next: Mount Saint Mary continues its five game homestand with Skyline doubleheaders against St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday and the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. Both twinbills are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the MSMC Baseball Field.
