Mount Saint Mary Suffers Heartbreaking Loss To Manhattanville

Knights rattle off 21 hits in non-conference loss

Fishkill, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team suffered a heartbreaking loss as Manhattanville staged a seven run comeback and then won the game in extra innings by a score of 13-12. Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) was 5-for-6 on the day for the Knights as they slugged out 21 hits in the contest.

The Mount put the first four runs of the game on the board early in the first inning. After singles by Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.), freshman Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) singled through the left side to plate Tait. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) doubled home two runs with two outs and Joe Stewart (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a RBI single to plate the fourth run of the inning.

Manhattanville scratched out a run in the second after Luke Scoggins scored on a wild pitch. Rizzo knocked in a Mirra on a single to left field in the second to push the lead back to four. Goodwin then homered off the foul pole down the right field line in the top of the third for his first home run of the year.

Mount Saint Mary added a run in the fourth when Tait was thrown out stealing second while Mirra stole home on a double steal. Manhattanville cut the lead to four  in the fifth inning on a throwing error and then on a Jack Matero RBI single with two outs.

Stewart led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple to right center and then scored on a balk. After Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) reached on an error, Mirra drove him in with a single to left field to take a 9-3 lead.

The Valinats once again cut into the lead after a Matero two RBI double in the seventh inning. Stewart once again lead off an inning with a triple and Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) drove him in with a single through the left side. The Knights pulled off a double steal to add an 11th run and Tait drives home Mirra with a RBI triple to left center.

Manhattanville then put together a seven run eighth inning where they had seven hits including RBI singles by Anthony Quatrochi, Hathaway Roper, a two RBI single by Stephen Merrill, a two RBI double by Matero and a bases loaded walk by Peter Iannarilli to tie the game.

The Knights got runners on second and third with two outs and then Mirra was caught stealing home to send the contest to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Iannarilli homered over the right field wall to give the Valiants its first lead of the game. The Knights got a runner to second base with two outs in the tenth inning but a diving play by Iannarilli saved a game-tying single to give the Valiants an extra innings victory.

Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) took the loss in relief as he threw two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Anthony Collura (Franklin Square, N.Y.) started the contest and allowed one run and one hit over three innings of work. Nick Carita picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief after Noah Garcia started with three innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits.

Mirra finished with five hits, including three runs, one run batted in and three stolen bases while Tait finished 4-for-6 with a triple. Goodwin drove in three runs on the contest and Stewart was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two triples. Matero finished with five RBI for the Valiants while Merrill was 4-for-6 with two RBI and Quatrochi had three runs scored.

At 10-12 overall, the Knights return to Skyline action with a doubleheader against St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday and a twinbill the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the MSMC Baseball/Softball Complex.
