Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team won its second straight match on Monday with a hard fought 5-4 non-conference decision over visiting Western Connecticut. The Mount swept the three doubles matches against the Colonials and received singles wins from sophomores
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.).
The Mount opened a 3-0 lead following doubles play on Monday and needed each victory to secure the team win. The top pair of
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Tiriolo moved to 4-1 on the season with a convincing 8-2 victory. The second pair of
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) and Gallo picked up their first win together with an 8-5 triumph and the third team of
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
David Gonzalez (Middletown, N.Y.) improved to 3-2 on the year with an 8-3 victory.
Western Connecticut rallied in the singles competition, winning four of the six matches. William Hogan remained unbeaten at the top flight, outlasting McGorty 4-6, 6-3, 10-2, while Matthew Carino improved to 3-1 on the season at second singles with a 6-0, 4-6, 10-3 victory over Terry.
Tiriolo remained unbeaten in singles matches for the Knights with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Chauncey Allers at the third position that improved him to 5-0 on the season. Gallo picked up the Mount's other singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jay Kilcourse at the fourth slot to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Fifth and sixth singles were also tight, hard fought affairs on Monday. Ryan suffered a 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 4-10 defeat to Matthew Kusaila on Monday, while Gonzalez was topped by Zachary Ruscoe at the sixth position 6-4, 6-4.
Monday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 4-1 overall on the season, while the loss drops Western Connecticut to 0-4. Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Tuesday when it welcomes Skyline Conference foe Purchase to Newburgh. First serve with the Panthers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
