Softball Takes Two From St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Bennett works one-hitter in season debut

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team opened its 2019 home schedule on Saturday with a pair of Skyline Conference wins, taking 3-0 and 3-1 decisions from visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Junior Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) earned a win and a save in her season debut for the Knights.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 3 – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 0
Bennett made her first appearance of the season in Saturday's opener and stifled the Bears, allowing just one hit in a complete game effort. She surrendered just one walk and fanned seven opponents in moving to 1-0 on the season.
 
Mount Saint Mary got all the scoring it needed in the home half of the first inning when junior Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) connected on a home run with two outs in the frame.
 
The Knights increased their lead to the final three run decision in the fifth when Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) chased home Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout from Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.).
 
The Mount outhit St. Joseph's 4-1 in the opener with Lang continuing her hot start to the season with a 2-for-3 effort with a run and an RBI. Oury added a hit and a run scored, while McCann finished with a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
 
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 3 – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 1
The Knights got off to another quick start in game two with a pair of runs in their first at-bat. After Almodovar opened the inning by reaching on an error, sophomore Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) plated her with a one-out, run scoring single to left field. Following a second error and a base hit, Alyssa Hernandez (Milldetown, N.Y.) delivered the second run of the inning with a bases loaded walk.
 
St. Joseph's got on the board for the first time on Saturday in the top of the sixth and sliced the Knights advantage in half with its lone run of the day. Jessica Vento led off the frame with a double and was later delivered on a run scoring groundout to bring the Bears to within 2-1.
 
The Mount answered back in the home half of the inning and regained a two run lead, taking advantage of a hit and a walk. Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) started the inning with a single and later scored the final run of the day on a run scoring groundout from O'Neill.
 
Mount Saint Mary outhit the Bears 7-5 in game two and featured six different players with a base hit in the game. Moustouka finished up 2-for-3 with a run with O'Neill going 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI for the Knights.
 
O'Neill picked up the win in the circle for the Knights, going the first 6.0 innings and allowing a run on four hits while fanning four. Bennett came on to pick up the save with a scoreless seventh, allowing one base hit.
 
Saturday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 5-9 overall on the season and to a perfect 4-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Mount is a trip to New Paltz on April 3. First pitch with the Hawks is set for 3:00 p.m.
