New Paltz, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team returned to action on Wednesday and saw its four game winning streak come to an end with a pair of 5-1 road losses at New Paltz. Junior
Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) recorded three hits in game two, while
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) recorded a pair of safeties in the opener.
Game 1: New Paltz 5 – Mount Saint Mary 1
The Knights got off to a good start in the opener, plating a run in the top of the second to open the scoring. After
Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) reached on an error and stole second, she was delivered with the game's first run on a run scoring single off the bat of
Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.).
The one run lead held until the home half of the fourth when the Hawks plated what proved to be the deciding runs in the game. Celia Santini started the fourth inning rally with an infield single before Nikki Bowen plated two runs with a base hit with one out in the frame.
New Paltz added three more runs in the fifth to close out the scoring in the game, recording just one hit in the frame. The Hawks took advantage two walks and a hit batter to open up the final four run advantage. Katie Quagliana delivered the only hit, driving in a pair of runs for the Hawks in the inning.
Mount Saint Mary outhit the Hawks 5-4 in the opener, with Bennett producing two of the team's hits. She finished up the opener 2-for-4, while Oury ripped a double and scored the team's lone run. Hernandez picked up her fourth RBI of the season with Bennett and Oury each stealing a base.
New Paltz had four different players record a hit in the game, with Quagliana and Bowen each driving in two runs. Quagliani scored twice for the Hawks and Caroline Alicandri drew a walk and scored two runs.
Bennett suffered the loss in the circle after working 5.2 innings in her third appearance of the year. She allowed five runs on four hits and fanned four. Quagliana picked up the complete game win, surrendering an unearned run and posting two strikeouts.
Game 2: New Paltz 5 – Mount Saint Mary 1
The Mount got off to a quick start for the second time on Wednesday in game two, getting on the board in the top of the first inning. After
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) walked and advanced to second on a groundout, she was delivered by Lang with a one-out triple to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead.
New Paltz answered right back with two runs in the home half of the first and added three runs in the fourth to finish off the scoring on the day. Meagan Blair delivered the big hit in the first with a two-run double with two outs in the inning, with Michaela Damore popping a two-run home run in the three-run fourth.
New Paltz outhit the Mount 7-6 in game two, with Lang producing half of the team's hits. She wrapped up the day 3-for-4 with an RBI with Bennett, Oury and
Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) producing the other hits for the Mount.
Blair was the only New Paltz player with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Damore, Ashley Puig and Kelsey Trudden all recorded a hit and a run scored in game two.
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) suffered the loss in the circle and fell to 2-3 on the season. She worked 3.1 innings for the Mount and allowed five runs on six hits and struck out three. Emily Fox earned the win for the Hawks, scattering six hits and striking out one in 7.0 innings.
Wednesday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-11 overall. The Knights get right back on the field on Thursday when they travel to Western Connecticut for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader with the Colonials.
